Where do you work - hellville? I "only" have to bill 1900 hours a year. It's not hard to do, but I'd prefer to only have to bill 1200 or 1300.

Asshole partner. It's because of the jelly-like spines they have when dealing with clients that clients are able to act like assoholes. The few partners I've worked for who say stuff like, "Actually, the office is closing early today, so we'll get that to you next week," when they know the client doesn't need or won't look at whatever they are asking for until next Thursday seem to get more business anyway. Maybe it's because the client respects them, while they continue to piss all over the wimps who volunteer to have something for them by 1:00 pm on July 4th.

So, long story short: Shit on the Asshole partner's desk before taking him the fuck out.

You're going to hate me, but when I was billing hours, I was at 1850 required. And I never even hit that. I concentrated on realization and had a good partner who said he didn't care if I hit 1700 with high realization.

I went the extra mile for people, giving them my cell #, meeting on weekends, taking trials/hearings others didn't want. You can make yourself valuable in other ways than mere hours.

My managment also understood that I was not the sort of person who could research anything or sit behind a desk for too long. So they gave me really nasty contentious cases. I actually enjoyed the stress and insanity, but eventually, the not seeing my wife got to me...

When I use to write rants about hating law, it was largely when I was stuck behind a desk or being forced to review docs for some reason.

I did the 2000 hr per year joint about six years ago. That was nothing but lying on bills. It was all very sleazy to me. I did it, but it seemed wrong, and rather stupid.

My suggestion is to walk before they make you run. Find a niche and have a life. You're going to get cancer or heart disease someday; don't pisss your life away being somebody's cubicle lackey. You're always young enough to switch. The saddest people are those who never move out of fear. Its scary. But trust me... you'll wonder why you didn't do it years ago once you move.

And frankly, there's no upside to where you are now. You don't want to be partner. Some will diagree, and their mileage may vary. But I think I understand what you're like, and I don't think its for you. And I say that as the highest compliment I can give...
