The only difference between the economic experts and the others is they'll whack up the bill to six figures having accting associates read irrelevant boxes of docs before they'll give you their initial assessments.

The expert testimony industry stands at the base of everything completely fucked up in the litigation business. If there's a bigger racket, I've yet to see it. For further reading, check this out: http://www.caller2.com/2005/pics/PTO29jurisdiction.pdf

2.

I actually had a case that was low budget (but ended up my first million dollar case). we hired a really low budget damages guy. I told him "1 version of your report."

my case gets thrown out, i go to appeal, get my case back in, and 3 years later we headed for trial- I look at my "experts" report, and he has 4 versions on his computer. he was a mess and I decide to skip that. the Judge bi-furcates, which buys time. I win and now it's damage time. I say, I ain't using an expert. I'll prove my damages with the infringer's testimony and my president's. the other lawyer actually moved to have my case thrown out since i couldn't prove damages w/o an expert. huh? the weird thing was the judge actually thought about it, i could tell he was about to step on my case.

i hate experts.

but, since this is the parents board, i will say this- if you can get your kids into a position where they're hired as an expert, that is a lucrative thing.

Ever dealt with an "Expert Broker"?

"Yeah, I need a [insert type of expert], from out of state."*

"I got one in Maryland."

"Fine. How many times has he testified?"

"He's got a few under his belt, but it's all good. He can handle himself. Knows the drill. Where can I fax the C.V.?"

Parents should be careful their kids don't get into this crowd, IMHO.

* So nobody knows too much about him/her.

That's actually my dream career move. If I could start getting tax expert gigs, it would improve the quality of my life tenfold.

We still have that little issue, npi, out there, but I told your wife to save the money on the paternity tests. I think we know what's what

Kids = A positive. Does that mean I can't complain about parenthood sometimes?

Doesn't this depend on the kids? I mean, my offspring are wonderful, but I often worry about the neighbors'. And the notion of Slave, Jr. does leave me with a bit of trepidation.

As to your kids, while I know I've heard Justice Holmes-style concerns, I also know that there is a tendancy for IQ to move toward the mean, so I don't share those worries.

I love mine. They're both a lot of fun and veru interesting in their own way. What's more, aside from the pets, they are the only two creatures on the planet who really love me.
