Overrated/Underrated

1. Food: popcorn with a little salt. Simple, perfect. Anyone caught putting that artificial butter-flavored crap on it should be shot. If they don't die of a heart attack first.

2. Actor: I second Morgan Freeman. He's come a long way from As the World Turns, baby. Plus the best voice anywhere. Actress: Lili Taylor. Brilliant.

3. Music: Duran Duran. Derided as a brainless pretty boy band (by the same fucking idiot music critics who were holding up lighters at Poison concerts) but wrote some really great songs. Just ignore all the eyeliner and listen.

4. Law Firm: they're all full of themselves. Best practitioners I've ever met were two solos who do their job extremely well without yapping about it.

5. Profession: skilled day care worker. My friend takes care of 30 kids and gets paid enough to be on welfare. Unbelievable.

6. Movie: Household Saints. Lili Taylor is ultrareligious girl who is either undergoing religious experience or severe psychological problems.

7. Song: Midnight Train to Georgia. If you aren't ready to hop on the train when Gladys Knight cries "I got to go, I got to go" you haven't been listening.

8. TV Show: This Week with David Brinkley (not that twit Stephanopolous). Why "Meet the Press" gets all the accolades is beyond me.

9. Panties that fit. Why women insist on wearing agonizing too-small butt floss or lumpy Victoria's Secret lace that shows through your slacks is a mystery. 'Pretty' and 'discreet' are not incompatible.

10. Sex: it's almost all underrated. What's not to like?

I think part of what people are complaining about with sushi is that, like lobster, it is supposed to be a rarified feast. Ideally, it's local and fresh, not something you get from Qwiky Mart or Red Lobster. If any fish is rubbery, even squid or octopus, something's been done wrong.

Edited to add that I should finish reading new posts before replying.

Inside the Actor's mind

I'd pay money to see Keanu Reeves on Inside the Actors Studio - James whatever his name is would stroke out in the middle of the program.

re: Shoes - our ability to accessorize is what separates us from the animals. Guys just dont' get that women do not buy shoes to look good for men, we buy them because we like them for us.

I am just glad taht David Hyde Pierce will finally be able to come out of the closet after all these years. It must have been such a relief for that guy who was on Caroline in the City

I'm embarrassed to admit that I know exactly which guy you're talking about. And the other guy on that show (the boyfriend?) had the fattest thighs, really, a very unattractive and weird build on him.

And Purse Junkie's point about lacy underwear reminded me of a pet peeve about lacy bras with seams on the cups. Why do they make these? More importantly, why do women buy them? They look bad under everything. And why do the wardrobe people on NYPD Blue put them on the actresses? Kim Delaney spent a significant portion of her career sporting a lumpy disheveled rack. She obviously needs a better agent.

Bilmore,

We often disagree, but you're dead on with this one. Sex on mushrooms is disturbing. All I can recall from the last time was people knocking on the thin doors of the shore house while I heard the line "They're naked and they dance" repeating in my head from "Their Satanic Majestie's Request", which was playing on the stereo. Or maybe it was thr Rumplemintz that was working on me... Either way, I gave up that idea for good...

A friend of mine thought I would like the soundtrack and bought it for me (which I do, it has Sonata Pathetique (a favorite) and is really well put together - at least to my untrained ear), and I listen to it all the time. Very meditative, as you say. Glad to hear the film is good too - I look forward to it.

As an aside, I really like sushi - have liked it for years. I really like the texture and the taste and eating with chopsticks. It's fun food.

And this is a little story for Paigow - if she is out there (because it involves minor celebrity and umbrellas). Dominick Dunne (who is apparently very short) whacked me in the head with his unnaturally large Gucci (I think) umbrella on the street today. I glared at him and he said "I'm so sorry" in a sort of spaced out way.
I think I hate oversized designer umbrellas more than I hate fur coats and LessinSF. I have to fight the urge to grab them and snap them in half. I think maybe I shoudl try a different tactic. Go to Burberry and buy a fucking beach umbrella and parade around in it when it is THREATENING RAIN or SNOWING. Just be the umbrella asshole of the year. I am sorry for Mister Dunne's mistreatement of you. I have lost all respect for him, and I do like his writing, though he may be in that overrated category for writers since OJ. Loved his early novels.

And on a totally unrelated note, I am thinking that perhaps I have had cunninglingus with only the Sebbys of the world (which would amek sense since I probably met them tripping at dead shows or at hunter s thompson book signings). I need to find more Jack MANfreds.

Bored Board Poll

1) Lobster and Caviar are fantastic. You guys are nuts. TRUFFLES, however, are costlier than both and offer little to me.
2) Sad to say, but ROBERT DeNIRO. Since the Godfather II, he's done [what feels like] 5 movies every single year playing the exact same character - the only difference is whether he's the "Mean" tough guy or the "Funny" tough guy. Or both. And his pal Marty needs to tell him one of these days that he doesn't need to do every damn movie he's offered.
3) Babs. I just don't get it.
4) Rather than say law firm - I'd rather say "law graduates" And hands down, this goes to HARVARD GRADS. Almost every one I ever worked with treated their assignment as if it was beneath them, and all had a chip on their shoulder that they didn't get into Yale. And yes, I was too dumb to go to Harvard.
5) STOCKBROKERS. Never before has a profession let so many ignoramuses make so much fucking money.
6) I do not how you can critcize Kane as it deserves all the praise it receives. Truly a remarkable, cutting edge and incendiary film. "Schindler's List" was already mentioned, but I second its nomination. Picking recent overrated Best Picture winners is far too easy, since they all were. So I'll just go with Gone With the Wind. Sprawling - yes. Timeless - yes. But the acting was hammy, even by 1939's standards.
7) Toss up between Yesterday by the Beatles and Satisfaction by the Stones. Two songs routinely touted as two of the greatest of all time by two of the greatest artists of all time. Greatest Artists clearly, but I can think of 25 songs by each band better than these tunes.
8) ANYTHING on HBO It's fascinating to watch critics drool all over themselves over repetitive and retarded dreck like Sopranos [sucked since Season 1], SATC [only thing making watching that SJP witch tolerable is seeing Kim's tits week after week], 6 Feet Under [wow, people die and people are gay. Wild] and OZ [gee, what can we get away with this week]. All highly overrated, if not totally awful
9) BOXER SHORTS. They cut off circulation in your quads and leave VBL in your pants.
10) Okay, call me a heretic but Blow Jobs are highly overrated. Most girls use so much teeth its outright painful, and others just ain't doing it right. Can you please take off your pants and let's cut to the chase?
Blow jobs are overrated. Unless its the only way to shut her up.

Sex is much better and feels like a workout if you really get into it.

That said, I did know a chick who gave hummers which were so spectacular I still recall it ten years later. She ruined all other women for me in that regard, so maybe I'm unfiarly biased.

If I could only have one food, it would be sushi. If I could only have one type, it would be salmon. I've always found this strange because I hate cooked salmon.

Tuna runs a close second.

If you don't like sushi, try it again at a good restaurant.

S(I do agree that trendy sushi places suck, but if they've got good fish, I'll put up with the assholes)D

Underrated

Food: Chili. I rarely have had an unsatisfying bowl of chili. If it weren't so damn bad for me, I could eat it five times a week.

Job: Military. Yeah, the first 10-15 years suck, but after that you are home free. These damn colonels and generals are retiring at 55 on full pensions, and then taking 6 figure contracts with defense contractors. Plus, assuming the Bush Administration gets us into a few more wars, there will be plenty of expert commentary jobs available. Not a bad gig at all.

Actor: Tim Roth. He's always enjoyable to watch, even when he's a villain.

Music: The Afghan Whigs. Kick ass rock, with a brain. I cannot play it at least than deafening volume. That's probably why they aren't more popular.

Athlete: John Stockton. Retiring this year at 41, with no fanfare whatsoever.

Law firm: Mine. But of course, I can't tell you which it is.

Agreed. I missed out on this for a spell, because I also love good wasabi, and eat it on a big variety of foods. When I had sushi, I would pile it on. Unfortunately, good sushi is a fairly delicate taste, and easy to hide with the wasabi. For years, I thought I loved sushi, but finally realized that what I really loved was the wasabi delivery platform.

Then, a few years ago, I wised up, and stopped using the wasabi on the fish. Now I can taste the sushi, and love it even more.

(Rare roast beef, chewy roll, au jus, slathered with wasabi. Mmmmmm . . .)

I think he's in the "don't ask, don't tell" category. No one asks, but everyone assumes - like Jodie Foster.
