AI Big Band Night

Poor John Stevens; he missed the night for his favorite genre.

The good news is that no one sucked. The worst performances were merely good -- or a'ight as Randy Jackson says -- rather than great. I looooove this kind of music and was inclined to be more picky on interpretation than in previous weeks. For me that separated the best from the simply OK.

Diana started out the night in another unfortunate dress. The wardrobe people must be trying to sabotage her because they pick clothes that make her look more plump. Diana seems to have two "settings" when she sings: full out belting and slightly flat (or maybe just lacking in energy which comes off as flat). I'm not sure why Randy is such a fan of Diana. She has a big voice but her performances didn't grab my attention. I can't even remember what songs she sang.

George wasn't at his best. He wasn't bad, just not great. "Cheek to Cheek" wasn't solidly in his range -- the highs were too high and the lows were too low -- and he didn't give the song any "zing." There are so many fun Big Band songs that there had to be a better song for him to choose. "What a Wonderful World" was nice but I was hoping he'd do something to put his unique stamp on it. He didn't. I agreed with Randy that his performances were safe and a'ight. George is definitely at risk this week.

LaToya has the best voice of the bunch and had some fun with her songs. She sang very very well. Still, I'd have liked to hear more dynamic changes and some individuality, especially in "Don't Rain on My Parade." I agreed with Simon that it was great Broadway. He said it as a compliment but I was hoping for more from her. Nevertheless, she had the second best performances of the night.

Jasmine could probably have the best straight pop career of the finalists. She is cute enough and you don't need a stellar voice to sing pop. What she'll need is some packaging and good coaching. She did a nice job on her songs but there wasn't any real energy or intensity, especially when she is not belting it out. The best way to explain is by contrast with Fantasia.

Fantasia had, IMHO, the performances of the night. I'd never have picked a Queen song for Big Band night, but it worked. And way she sang the Streisand song perfectly explains what I mean about energy and intensity: when she is singing softer, it doesn't go blah; she keeps you listening and the song and her voice are just as interesting as when she is loud, maybe more so. It didn't make me cry like Paula, but it was simply fabulous.

I cut back to just voting for Fantasia and LaToya this week. I hit redial a lot and am hoping that the judges' obvious preferences for those two don't backfire. Jasmine and George are vulnerable but looking at the competition as a whole, I'd like to see Jasmine go tomorrow.

Good stuff, but I am waiting for the full tape before I get real to it. Speaking of real, some random reality TV thoughts I am currently having

Amazing Race - They fucking took app's for AR6 without publicizing it. The time has passed. Bastards, even putting aside that they took Alison from Big Brother 3 instead of me for AR5.

American Idol - I would have like to see Stevenzzz do Big Band. Although a couple of these contestants will do fine, none of them have the charisma of Ruben or Clay, and I suspect none will do as well as Clay. Fantasia has the voice and potentially the personality, but she can come off as haughty and pouty. London is my prediction to win (not that that is going out on a limb).

Real World - Are they not going to show any footage related to rape charges that were made by a guest (not a cast member) of the house at a party against another non-cast member guest? Allegedly, the girl was passed out (or close) drunk in the bathroom when whatever happened happened. Initially, Bunim/Murray wouldn't even give up copies of the tapes to the police. I can see that they might not choose to air much about it due to liability and the pending actions, but they haven't so much as mentioned it. That said, I was glad to see Brad finally get his rocks off (with a consenting adult).

Real World/Road Rules - The Inferno: Will it never end as they fail miserably in their attempts to eat their own each week? Could Coral, CJ, Abe and Veronica be more unlikeable? Gag me with a maggot.

The Casino - Another Burnett show coming in June (along with AR6 and BB4) that takes place in a casino?!?! He is 3 for 3 - Survivor, Aprpentice and his old EcoChallenge shows. This can only rock. Whoo Hoo!

Survivor - Now it gets fun. Don't forget the penultimate show this Thursday is followed by the 2-hour finale this Sunday.

No, but how fun would it be to have a flashback? Very.

60's? Listen dorky choir boy, drugs weren't just for the 60's. The late 80's and early 90's were a blast, too.

AR7: Lester and Fugee. Best Odd Couple team ever. We win because Lester is strategically ruthless and a great game player and I'm such a harmless wingnut everyone will trust me. Also, I'll know a missionary in every country to help us.

Yeah, I can just picture it. You are the guy who "discovered" the Dead in the late 80s, right when they were really hitting their stride. "No dude, Jerry is sounding better than he ever has!" Yup, acid was reaaaally cool in the 90s. I mean, think about all those hippie bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden with their blissed out, feel good, trippy tunes. "Whoa dude, I heard someone say that the 90s were going to make the 60s seem like the 50s!!!" I'm sure you thought you were pretty fucking cool.

No way, dude. It's timeless. Didn't it enjoy a big resurgence just last week? Maybe it is actually retro.

I hate the Dead. They are as overrated as the Beatles. Both of which suck asses.

Liked Nirvanna, but think Kurt was a scum bag who married a brain dead stripper. Didn't like Soundgarten all that much. Think Eddie Vedder is hot (or was hot at one time).

Waiting for Game 7

Kapanen vomits
As does all of Leafs nation
I'm blaming Not Bob

So what's the verdict? Cheap shot, or greatest hit of all time?

To y'all who haven't seen it yet, watch ESPN News soon, or Plays of the Week, or something. To summarize, incredibly vicious Darcy Tucker hit on Sami Kapanen in overtime leads directly to Leafs glorious scoring chances, which get thwarted, as Kapanen somehow makes his way off the ice despite being completely knocked out, which leads to a Flyers 2-on-1, which leads to a Leafs 3-on-2, which leads to ANOTHER Flyers 2-1, which Roenick buries, series over.

I'm going to bed. I'm too sad to do anything else. But still, what a hit. They'll probably be remembering this one long after everyone forgets who won the 2004 Stanley Cup.
