I would then have to stand corrected - that would definitely be "out" BTW: not a news flash but Bulldog from Frazier - also a gay.

Isn't real wasabi exceedingly difficult to come by in the U.S.? It sounds like you are eating horseradish, NTTAWWT.

He's been with the same guy oh 15-20 years and I don't recall it ever being a secret. The press never made a big deal out of it, I suppose because he never did.

Now, as to your second list, great call on Morgan Freeman. He always rocks (n.b. his performance in the aforementioned Shawshank.) Even in otherwise crappy movies, he's good (I'm thinking of two pretty indistinguishable movies in which he starred with Ashley Judd -- very forgettable movies, but he always gives a believable and thoughtful performance.)
I like Morgan Freeman, but I must say, he doesn't ALWAYS rock. You clearly didn't see Dreamcatcher.

If you're in New York, I suggest trying Tomoe sushi on Thompson. The best sushi I've ever had and it's cheap. It will ruin you for all other sushi restaurants. Nobu has the best tuna in the world. Yama, Blue Ribbon and Sushi of Gari are all good, but you would be surprised at the difference in taste and texture between Nobu's tuna, Tomoe's fish and the rest of the sushi restaurants.... Haven't been to Sushi Samba yet, but it sounds good.
Tomoe is great, but I prefer the Yama on Carmine [which, I find, is better than its brethren on Houston and Gramercy AND takes reservations].

I used to be a big fan of Suibi on 53rd but I haven't eaten there in about 5 years.

Best sushi in town, bar none, is the unassuming Sushi Yasuda on 44th (?) - but don't go unless you're on an expense account.

Sushi Samba is nothing more than a pick-up bar. Actually - to be accurate - TWO pick-up bars.

Job: Military. Yeah, the first 10-15 years suck, but after that you are home free. These damn colonels and generals are retiring at 55 on full pensions, and then taking 6 figure contracts with defense contractors. Plus, assuming the Bush Administration gets us into a few more wars, there will be plenty of expert commentary jobs available. Not a bad gig at all.

Actor: Tim Roth. He's always enjoyable to watch, even when he's a villain.

Music: The Afghan Whigs. Kick ass rock, with a brain. I cannot play it at least than deafening volume. That's probably why they aren't more popular.

Athlete: John Stockton. Retiring this year at 41, with no fanfare whatsoever.

Law firm: Mine. But of course, I can't tell you which it is.
Food: apparently soy milk based smoothies. I would have said burritos a couple of years back, but the times have caught up with me and baja is always packed.

actor: catherine keener. makes consistently superb acting choices and acts excellently in them. john goodman. deserved the oscar for walter sobchek in the Big El

Music- black crowes. i never hear them get their due. also, Juice Newton who was a great balladeer in her day.

movie- big lebowski. a nonsensical plot does not take away from the greatness of this film. living in oblivion- greatest movie about movie making, ever. bet you never saw it.

tv show- Are You Hot? Lorenzo lamas dressed like a golden retreiver talking about the combo platter in his pants while a gay clothing designer made men turn around to show off their asses. hilarious. I will never understand why this was not a ratings smash.

The WSJ ran a piece a while back that indicated that it is effectively impossible to get real wasabi in the U.S. Since then, I've studied the wasabi ingredients labels at my local Japanese market and it is always horseradish. The WSJ article was about someone who was starting a wasabi farm on the West Coast. The growing technique was a highly guarded secret and the stuff very expensive but available by mail order from their web site.

Sometimes. While I also like just plain horseradish, the green powdered (real) wasabi is also available here - just harder to find. (Most is made from western horseradish, and is still better than just plain horseradish - the good stuff is made from the japanese horseradish, and tastes different, and even better.)

(BTW, wasabi is a natural food poisoning antidote - that's why it is traditionally served with the raw fish dishes.)

Good call, Jack.

1. Food: Beef. Whether we are talking about the simple joy of a cheeseburger at the local joint, or the pricey joy of a filet at the Palm, beef is good. Oh, sure, I like chicken, and there are health issues with too much red meat, but there's a reason that my ancestors were forced to eat potatoes so that Baron Whatshisname could eat beef. It tastes good.

2. Actor: Bogart. The guy could play the romantic lead, the bad guy, the tough good guy, and the cynic with the heart of gold. Don't believe me? Don't even bother with Casablanca (which I love) -- watch the Maltese Falcon, Sabrina, the African Queen, Key Largo, and the Treasure of Sierra Madre.

3. Band/Singer: Jimmy Buffett is regarded as a lightweight party type music guy (Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw?) with a fan base of goofy corporate drones escaping their pitiful lives for a day at his shows by wearing loud tropical shirts and drinking too much Corona. But people often overlook his serious stuff -- A Pirate Looks at 40, Come Monday, and songs like that.

4. Law firm: None that would mean anything to any non Podunkvillian.

5. Occupation: I'll echo the person who picked day care. Oh, and teachers.

6. Movie: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence. Perhaps John Wayne's best acting, James Stewart givng a great performance as a "hero" wrestling with himself, and an ambiguous message. Yet the consensus is that Shane is *the* great western. Granted, the ending of Shane ("Shane! Come back, Shane!") is moving, but what about hearing "that's the man who shot Liberty Valence" as we see Stewart sigh? Perfection.

7. Song: I'll catch some flack for this, I am sure, but I just listened to the Jagged Little Pill CD, and You Oughta Know still sounds great to me. Angry Chick music arrived on mainstream radio thanks to that song. Great lines, too -- "are you thinking of me while you fuck her?" and "you told me you'd hold me until we died, but you're still alive!" Alanis may not know irony, but who cares?

8. TV Show: Sports Night. I still can't believe that Sorkin's second best show survived and this one didn't. ABC sucks.

9. Article of clothing: The ascot, of course. Along with the smoking jacket.

10. Sexual position or activity: They're all good.

Speaking of sushi - and pick up bars -

let me recommend Sushi Groove in SoMa in SF.

On Lester's recommendation, I tried the "foie gras sushi" - which was nothing more than a big hunk of foie gras over sushi rice. Possibly the best damn thing [food wise] I've ever eaten.

Can't be too tough - I've grown it, and I'm far from an expert gardner.

Goofy corporate drones wearing loud tropical shirts and drinking too much are an essentially fun group. Granted, you're not going to spend much time discussing fractals with them, but who'd want to when you can get really drunk and screw instead?

In honor of mothers' day

http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/200...ing/index.html

[Salon article: "To breed or not to breed: Studies show that couples who choose not to have children are happier than those who do." This may have been inspired by a recent Atlantic article: http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/2003/05/tsingloh.htm].

Salon is a subscription site, but you can get a day pass by watching a Mazda ad.
