I doubt it was a real communist newspaper. Probably an "Italian Pro Communist" newspaper which by European standards is probably pretty conservative. I know that the communist party in Italy supported the deployment of the pershing missle (or whatever the medium range missles were called) in the 80s by the US. I wouldn't be surprized if they supported US in the war. When I lived in Italy, Ciccolina, an Italian porn star, was elected to parliament. So was Mussolini's granddaughter and she used his pictures in her campaigns.

The fact that they referred to her as journalist is enough for me.

Perhaps she also gave to the Tsunami Fund.

Yeah, the meaning of the word has eroded a bit lately.

She's an anti-American, pro-Baathist naif, who swore up and down that the innocent Iraqi insurgents - who she supported - would not harm her.

Because of this self-righteous, self-important turd, the insurgents have an additional five million dollars (in Italian government ransom money) to use to butcher Coalition sons and daughters, and a family in Italy is without a son, husband and father.

NEW YORK (AP) - Dan Rather echoed a word he once used every night to sign off the "CBS Evening News" - courage - in anchoring the program for the final time after 24 years on Wednesday.

In a brief statement at the end of the broadcast, Rather paid tribute to Sept. 11 terrorist victims, tsunami survivors, American military forces, the oppressed, those in failing health and fellow journalists in dangerous places.

"And, to each of you," he said. "Courage."

He seemed to savor each word of his signoff: "For the 'CBS Evening News,' Dan Rather reporting. Good night."
The last group he directed his courage to was actually:

To my fellow journalists in places where reporting the truth means risking all.

Way to give the big F.U. to his colleagues at CBS, who obviously were not included in that send off, being as they know nothing about reporting the truth.

From Zacht Ei, a Dutch blog, translating from a Dutch newspaper:
  • Mr. Harald Doornbos is a veteran war reporter. He is no archetypical hawk nor a staunch supporter of the United States. In fact, he used to be a reporter for the communist newspaper 'De Waarheid' (Pravda) before it went bust.

However, this doesn't make him overly sympathetic towards Giuliana Sgrena, the Italian journalist who was held hostage by Iraqi insurgents. Some snippets from this article which was published today in a Dutch Christian broadsheet.

'Be careful not to get kidnapped,' I told the female Italian journalist sitting next to me in the small plane that was headed for Baghdad. 'Oh no,' she said. 'That won't happen. We are siding with the oppressed Iraqi people. No Iraqi would kidnap us.'

It doesn't sound very nice to be critical of a fellow reporter. But Sgrena's attitude is a disgrace for journalism. Or didn't she tell me back in the plane that 'common journalists such as yourself' simply do not support the Iraqi people? 'The Americans are the biggest enemies of mankind,' the three women behind me had told me, for Sgrena travelled to Iraq with two Italian colleagues who hated the Americans as well.

(Doornbos goes on to explain how the women demeaned him for travelling as an embedded reporter with the US military, for security reasons. They didn't want to hear about any safety concerns.)

'You don't understand the situation. We are anti-imperialists, anti-capitalists, communists,' they said. The Iraqis only kidnap American sympathizers, the enemies of the Americans have nothing to fear.

(Doornbos tells them they're out of their mind.)

But they knew better. When we arrived at Baghdad Airport, I was waiting for a jeep from the American army to come pick me up. I saw one of the Italian women walking around crying. An Iraqi had stolen her computer and television equipment. They were standing outside shivering, waiting for a cab to take them to Baghdad.

Why? Becuase Italy doesn't have real communists? I don't think you know what you are talking about.

Just sharing fun facts you know about Italy or are these points relevant to your point?

Before you make accusations you should read the relevant posts. This was my earlier post that the one in question was a follow up to:

"People keep calling this Italian Journalist a socialist but you have to be careful when trying to use Italian political terms with our definitions of the term. When I lived in Florence, the Communist party was in charge in Tuscany. Political posters with the Hammer and Sickle were everywhere. However, the communist party had moved way to the right since Stalin’s time. They were pro NATO, anti-Russian and pro-free enterprise. What made them different from the conservative parties was that they were for the welfare state. The socialists were also not real socialists. There were real socialist and communist parties but they were called the people's parties and weird names like that."

I stand by every word of that statement, and I do know what I am talking about (well maybe not, but clearly more than you).

Parents? I thought the parent with custody wanted him raised in the US.

Clearly my instincts were way off on the Italian journalist.

I thought the father was the parent with custody, and the reason he was returned.
