Concur. I think he'd do better if he gave up the pretense and simply did Sinatra covers. He could stay in Vegas and make a killing.

I thought he was interesting in a who's-this-guy? way when he first appeared during the When Harry Met Sally era, but as I listened to more of the songs this guy actually writes, it was all downhill.

Since I've never been on most of these these I-whatevers and have no idea what you're talking about, I'll just chime in and say that the drive along the 401 from Toronto to Montreal is pretty bleak. Lots of Wendys and Tim Hortons and that's about it. Only str8 will know what I'm talking about.
We're saving up the really good poll for post number 4999 so that people will be forced to cut and paste it into the new FB thread. Hilarity most likely will ensue.

Most desolate Canada drive I've done is Plattsburgh to Quebec (the city).

He's a hack, but his covers (and not just the sinatra - he does some older stuff from the 'teens/'20s that is even better) are great and he is a brilliant band-leader. He probably puts together the best band since Duke Ellington. Seriously, his shows are amazing, and every musician who plays with him seems willing to leap on a grenade for him.

I remember something Winton marsallis said about him in an interview - I paraphrase: "I love Harry Connick Jr. He is a really nice guy, a great guy. My 3 year old baby daughter can scat better than he can, but I love Harry Connick Jr."

The lack of mile markers makes the trip even more unbearable, because you don't have a sense of how much road you've put behind you or how much farther you have to go.
Concur on your selection of roads, but what kind of piece of shit car can only go 83 mph on 5 and doesn't have an odometer?

Gotta disagree. How is he any more non-original than most of the contestants who are doing imitations of current singers? There aren't too many of the 8 finalists or the wildcard 12 who sang a song and made it unique. I also like his voice.** He's got a nice sound and doesn't try to scream his way through a song. The test will be whether he can play on his style by taking more current songs and giving them a throwback vibe. Though as much as I like him, he'll probably be better in a few years. He's the youngest guy in the finals.

**I confess I also like Connick.

I have mixed feelings about George from reading his bio. He has an interest in opera. Can't tell yet whether he has that kind of voice, but I hate to see a potential opera singer turn to the dark side of pop just for the filthy lucre. Nevertheless, he needs to figure out how to look younger. He's the oldest looking 22 yr old I've seen. I think it is his eyes, they're fairly hooded -- maybe a brow wax? Maybe the mustache too?

I'd like to see Jennifer Hudson move on. She should have made it her week. She needs to focus on the clothes and not wear something odd or old looking.

This is the biggest surprise since Will Hung confessed that he had never had professional voice instruction.

New poll -- have you been Googled/been a Googler?

I wouldn't call it sucky (primarily because I am completely incapable of saying anything that could remotely be construed as hurtful), but I'd agree that it isn't one of the better ones we've had here in FB Land.

Anyway, in an effort to be constructive, here's a new poll, triggered by a recent converation with a friend. (This may be a repeat of an older one, but I don't remember.)

Have you ever been tracked down -- presumably by Google -- by someone you lost contact with eons ago? And have you ever Googled an old friend/lover/spouse/crush to contact them (or spy on them, you stalker you)?

Not Bob's answers: About six months ago, I got a call from a friend from my high school days. Not sure if he Googled me or not. He left Podunkville, but I'm still here, and listed in the phone book, so I ain't that hard to find.

As for part 2, I enter the names of all sorts of people (friends, relatives, opposing counsel with goofy names, etc.) into Google all the time while on a boring conference call. So far I have resisted the urge to hire a private detective to take pictures of all of my past loves and crushes. I did send someone an email via the classmates.com service once, as I think I discussed here or at Infirmation. But I didn't go out and get a real email address for her (classmates.com acts as the middleman) or phone number or anything like that. The email via the intermediary was stalker-ish enough.

Are there any baseball teams for sale?

from the Salon story onh Howard Stern and CLear Channel

"In 1998, Hicks turned around and bought the Texas Rangers from a group of investors that included Bush; Bush pocketed $15 million off his initial investment of $605,000, most of which was borrowed."-

And ino ther news, I saw my main man Bill Maher on Larry King last night (I am truly over the hill after this statement). He said some things I disagreed with for probalby the first time/

1) agrees with scharzenegger that foreigners should be eligible to be elected president. Uh, no. Depending on where you were born and your family situation, possible conflict of interest. Austria might not be a problem for an american movie star, but that is only one guy.

2) Marriage is basically extinct in Europe as it should be in the US. Marriage is extinct in Europe? I didnt get taht memo. Did you, ncs?

two things:

1. I would agree with you about #1, except there are people who are US citizens through their parents who just happened to be born in a different place (although lived their whole life in the US). For example, I have a friend who was born in Windsor but lived her whole life here. She can't be president. That doesn't seem right to me.

2. I think marriage is definitely deader in the UK than here, if anecdotal evidence means anything. I have a huge family there (not all one socio-economic class either, but mostly middle-class, and not all lefties) and only one of my cousins is married. Most of the rest of them are shacked up. At my cousin's wedding, a lot of her friends commented that they were throwbacks for getting married.

1) yes. this hott ie waiter I met while dining at Greens in SF in the early nineties emailed me out of the blue a year or so ago. When I met him, I was on my way to the bathroom, and he in all his drop dead hotness, followed me to the bano and asked me to coffee. I was about to leave for the airport and told him I couldnt but if he was ever in NYC to look me up. He said he was moving to Europe so our paths wouldnt cross. When he tracked me down (and I only have like one or two hits on google) he said he found my business card that I gave him and said that after modeling in the Czech republic for a bumch of years, he came back to NYC to model and act and write and remembered I said if he was ever in NYC. We met for a beverage at Michael Jordans in GCT and he was still smokin but became like Tim Robbins radical and totally despised anyone who made any money which is really annoying. C'est la vie.

2) I look people up on google when I am at work and there are boring polls going on on the board and I am desperate for some entertainment, And I will admit to Lexusing some guy I slept with to determine if he owned his property with say, a wife, bc I suspected after the three weeks we were seeing eachother that he might be married. lexus was not helpful. I have also lexused an ex to dtermine if he got a marriage license, just bc I wante to know how things turned out for him. More like getting to the end of a novel than stalking, you know? ANyway, he hadnt.
