I'm not, but I'm not saying it doesn't happen.

Sort of, although the two can converge from time to time.

You have been talked about a lot but this is the first time I have seen you post. Unless of course you have been a sock.

If this Thread was started by SlaveNoMore why is it moderated by Tyrone and Penske?

Because my cronies in Florida stole the election.
We'll discuss it over cigars and scotch and laugh at other's misery.

Thread Purpose

Tyrone Slothrop
Some people use this software to have different threads on different topics. I think we have generally found that it works better to have one thread going at a time, on all different topics. That way, when you're getting beaten up, it's easier to change the subject.
|
The short version of the long story is that when this Board was established and we moved over from Infirm (by way of bbbbbitchslap) we'd tried as best as possible to keep a single post bulletin board using threaded board software.
As such, we try to limit the old categories to one thread each.
For oddities such as death pools, super bowl pools and the like, someone may create a separate "thread" in an established category.

It was a compliment, as you, like me, made sense.

You called it retirement at the time, though. At least your private retirement account lasted longer than paigows--she was back within weeks.

Ty said the parents wanted him in Cuba- I was just calling bullshit.
As to threads, they pop up for special interest like on FB for pools or something. They help keep mind-numbingly boring esoteric crap separate from the other high-quality material. Like here, if this were properly managed, we would have a Tax thread. That way fringe and Wonk and Ty could create there little paradii w/o bugging me.
In a sense, the threads operate like the chess club would keep Atticus in a room with his peers after school so the cooler kids didn't need to get grossed out by him on their way home.

I was just trying to point out that there was a rational reason for the US to support authoritarian regimes that promoted economic growth. The liberals always argued that we supported them purely for imperialists reasons. Where instead those regimes ended creating systems were the people became prosperous and lived under democratic systems. What the liberals failed to grasp at there is a strong link between free markets and free governments. Many liberals argued that these countries would have been better of under socialist governments than under the capitalist authoritarian regimes. History has shown us that that position was very misquided.
|
Actually, what liberals objected to was the fact that we supported regimes that oppressed, tortured, and exploited their lower classes, while making the governing elite incredibly rich, often through business connections to US and other developed nations. Witness Citibank and United Fruit in Latin America; BP, Shell and the US majors in Iran; Anglo-American Mining in South Africa, etc.
A market is not really free if only a small portion of the population is allowed to participate as anything other than subsistence level labor. You really should do some catch-up reading. I suggest David Ricardo and John Stuart Mill for the basics, and perhaps a good dose of both Milton Friedman and Heilbronner for both sides of the early modern market theories.
You're largely spouting the neocon pundits' line without showing any appreciation of or understanding of the principles they profess to espouse. A more nuanced view would show that they are spinning like crazy to make the world's current situation fit their politics, rather than arguing real economics.

So, what you're saying is that, as a foreigner who only participates in the economic activity if the ruling elite, you understand how the economy affects the poor. Or did you comfort yourself with the knowledge that you always tipped the cyclo driver more than he usually made in a week, so things must be getting better?

She's Running
This confirms it:
- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton stood with one of her most conservative colleagues yesterday to announce a bill to curb sex-and-violence-drenched TV shows and video games.
Clinton (D-N.Y.) has several co-sponsors - including Sens. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) and Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) - for the bill, which would provide government funding to closely study the impact of such video games and shows on kids. But it was conservative Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) who caught the eye of political watchers.
