That would be the giardiniera, a spicy mix of veggies (jalapenos, carrots, peppers, celery, cauliflower, olives etc.). Order it hot, you get that, order it sweet and you get sweet green peppers. Order it wet and they dip the whole thing in beef juice.

I will buy that the stuff that looks like pepper could be very finely chopped black olives, but all that is visible is celery and carrot, and the celery isn't chopped finely enough.

The OM moved to Austin by using your method. He would go to a city, find the downtown area, sit at a bar, and talk to people. If you check out the alt-weeklies, you can get a great feel for the place. Ultimately, it all depends on what you're looking for in a city -- culture, educated people, great bar scene, lots of attractive singles, good parks, affordable housing, easy commutes.

Much of this you can discover online. I think Poynter.org has a list of alt-weeklies.

What you are looking at is the bottom of the jar of giardiniera. All that's left is the celery and a couple of carrot pieces. Obviously, someone's good-for-nothing, self-centered in-laws have already festooned their sandwiches with all the tasty peppers, cauliflower, olives, onions and smaller carrot pieces, leaving only the dregs for the picture taker, who was probably out mowing the yard looking forward to a nice sandwich. They probably took all the non-diet pop, too. Bastards.

RL, I moved to the Bay Area without knowing anyone there. One of my sisters lived about two hours away, but for the day-to-day stuff, I was entirely on my own. I had about three hours before the interview to scope the town out and decide whether or not I wanted to live there. I drove around a bit, stopped in a few bookstores and cafes, wandered through the neighborhoods, and figured it was a good place to be.

If I were you, I'd start thinking about how you want to live. I can eliminate a good part of the country because I fairly strongly believe that snow should be something that you drive to, play in, and then drive away from. I also sort of decided that I'm more of a west coast person than an east coast person. The snow thing had a lot to do with that, though I think it's also an attitude sort of thing.

Also think about where you've been in the past and where you liked and follow some instincts. I was offered a job in Amarillo once, I've only driven through, but I didn't even consider the job because I knew I'd be miserable there. Same goes for a suburb in Northern California. Though, the job I did take in a strange town, I knew almost immediately that I'd like it. (Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I made my college decision the same way.)

Are you a city person? Do you want natural beauty? Is accessability to other parts of the country important to you? Do you have a general idea of the people? Do you want a college town?

I know a couple who are thinking about leaving Houston, and they just went on a three month road trip to check out most of the western part of US and Canada, though they've already eliminated some places based on their past experiences. If you have time to travel, see where you'd like to live. Spend some time doing the types of things you'd do if you lived somewhere. Check out the bookstores and the movie theaters. Check out the restaurants and the parks. See what the newspapers have to say. Drive and walk around. Hell, you can sort of tell what a town is like by just going to a grocery store.

Also, there are differences between closeby places, even if they're subtle. For example, I'd move to Taos in a heartbeat, though I wouldn't be as quick to move to Santa Fe, and it'd take a lot of persuading to get me to Albuquerque. One of the jobs I turned down in California was only fifty miles from where I'd lived happily, but I knew if I moved there, it'd suck my soul.

How old are you? This is a critical factor. If you are in your 30's Chi-town is out. If you are in your early to mid-20's Chi-town is in. In your 30's, Bay area and NYC are in but San Diego is out.

No other cities are worth living in.

So if you are in your 30's, it is either the Bay area or NYC. Pick one based on whether you fear terrorists or earthquakes more.
