I was googling to see if KPMG really had non-Chalabi documents, and lo and behold I found this:
Quote:
Negotiations between the CPA and KPMG in relation to the CPA tender process were ended yesterday morning (12 May 2004) because agreement could not be reached on how KPMG could receive legal protection appropriate to investigations of this nature.
KPMG is disappointed that it is currently unable to continue this important work.

Apparently Ernst & Young has been hired to retrace KPMG's steps, and according to this article some Repubs don't like it one bit:
Quote:
"We have serious reservations about the way the investigation [into corruption] is being handled and are awaiting the answer to a range of questions we have put to the Bush administration," Christopher Shays, a Republican Congressman from Connecticut said.
In a letter to President Bush this month, Mr Shays expressed deep concern over the "apparent conflict between the coalition provisional authority (CPA) and the Iraqi governing council over the exercise of audit authority".
|
Unnamed sources say all of this stems from a growing animosity between Bremer and Our Friend Ahmed.

Seriously, do you dispute that there was abuse, or are you disputing where the money went? Give me a request and I'll find your evidence.

The only stories I've seen are sourced to Chalabi, and he apparently is not letting anyone independent see them. I find the stories plausible, but unproven.
Club's suggestion that KPMG is not independent is silly. My old firm used to do securities work for accounting firms, and I know more than I want to about the duty of care. As I said before, the contract with KPMG is what matters. If KPMG says x, y and z, I'm willing to believe, but I don't think they've said anything yet, and in light of who's paying their bills I don't think you can read anything into their retention or silence.

I never said they were tainted. I said you should consider them to be Chalabi's agent until proven otherwise.

cut and run
All the conservatives here who want us to stay in Iraq and make sure we do all we can do (hi bilmore!) should be very concerned that Bush is about to cut and run to try to save his re-election bid. Hence the Bremer/Powell trial balloon about how we'll leave after June 30 if the new government asks us to.

I saw that over the weekend, but I read it as a bluff which they don't expect to be called.

OK, whatever, but agent or not they are a third party that has seen the documents. From what I have read and posted, these are not Chalabi documents.

Has KPMG said anything about them? They're not a source for any article I've seen. I'm not saying that Chalabi is making the whole thing up, but no one independent of him has seen the proof, right?

get rich quick and die?
Query:
After reading some Drudge archives I'm left wondering, so you're unemployed in the US and all of sudden you decide the path to wealth is paved through war-torn Bagdhad.
Your business plan:
1. Go to Iraq
2. Uh.....????
3. Payday!?!?
What am I missing about this story?
