It is like pointing out that I ordered 2 tea bags in a Starbucks tea when they ring me up for the lower price. I assume that they know what they're doing when they ring up the smaller price and they are either trying to garner goodwill for a potential tip or they think it is stupid to charge for the second tea bag.
I've also worked in the service industry enough to know that the cashier doesn't care one bit about the small/regular soup discrepancy.

My only concern would be that the person was somehow going to get in trouble for it.

There is no way to track that, really unless someone actually saw the cashier mis-ring the medium as small, it isn't like it would be electronically tracked like a retail store

I'd call that the finest segue/thread tie/reference linkage in history. How in the fuck did you find that?
ETA: I'd also say Wodehouse knows pussy.

Being that the kitchen measures the soup inventory by volume every half hour and matches it against receipts, they no doubt fired the incompetent clerk.

right, but they gave her the extra to balance for the volume added by the copius semen added by the prep cooks who read about the latest round of associate raises in N.Y.C., else they would get in trouble for screwing with the food.

Now I feel bad. Would you have pointed out the mistake and paid for the larger soup?
Note: this has happened to me before at the same place -- and I pointed out the error in the past, and the cashier just giggled and said that it was my lucky day and didn't charge me for the difference.
If it makes any difference, the cashier is kind of cute.

If it were a place I visit frequently, I'd point it out the first time it happened, but not necessarily on subsequent visits.
Query: is there a tip jar and if so, are you fairly generous with the tip jar?

So what did they do when the news of the Goldman bonuses broke. Full on semen soup?

If I ordered & got a medium and the clerk only rang me up for a small, I point it out. If I noticed the clerk grabbing a medium bowl when I'd only ordered a small, I'd have pointed it out. But I don't think you should have to pay for a medium when you ordered a small.

That reminds me. I ordered from a pizza joint this weekend. Eggplant parm special. They sent me chix parm. I called. They said okay, well, credit your account or send the eggplant? I said send the eggplant, so I said "do you want the chix back?" she said "no, I can't send that out so keep it" so I had a chix parm and eggplant parm for the price really of eggplant. [I brought most of it home] I did ask her point blank.

I haven't seen it, but if you're asking I suppose I should be grateful.

Pure coincidence. I just happened to read it this morning on my way into work. Couldn't have fit better if I'd specially commissioned it.
