Among the many things I find unbelievable and outrageous about this is Rice's assertion that she only found out about the missing explosives about a month ago. She's the National Security Advisor. What the fuck does she do all day?

A reminder that Iraq and Terrorism aren't the only issues at stake here.

Or it really is a single-issue campaign. Then again, the Supremes have never been accused of being sexy.
And as much as the Daily Show tried to help them with that image, I'm not sure that showing naked justices was the way to advance their cause.

Stump speeches.

But don't worry.

Quote:
Bush spokesman Scott McClellan played down the threat. He said the administration's first concern was whether the weapons missing from the Al Qaqaa military installation posed a nuclear proliferation threat, and he said they did not. "We have destroyed more than 243,000 munitions," he said. "We've secured another nearly 163,000 that will be destroyed."

At the Pentagon, an official who monitors developments in Iraq said U.S.-led coalition troops had searched Al Qaqaa in the immediate aftermath of the March 2003 invasion and confirmed that the explosives were intact. Thereafter the site was not secured by U.S. forces, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
We checked to see the explosives were there and then we left.

I had just caught that. I'll bite, but more to Spookyfish's question.

IMHO, the most capital that anyone could gain from this (and it would be ghoulish, tacky, repulsive and all that if anyone tries to capitalize off of a sick man), would be if some pro-life group or another raises a serious flag about how much further any post-Roe world is if Kerry picks the next Justice or two. Other than that, I guess its a weaker argument for pro-choicers (we can remove the threat to Roe if we just get Kerry in to replace him!).

Its the single-issue that gathers the most single-issue voters, so that's why I think its most likely to be used in this context over the next week.

That said, if anyone tries to make political hay out of this over the next week, I'm gonna seriously consider buying my ticket to Chile'.

Hello
Why? I mean, I wish Rehnquist a speedy recovery, but I don't think it's inappropriate to use his hospitalization as an illustration that in the next four years it is very likely that one or more Supreme Court Justices will have to be replaced and whoever wins next week (plus the month of bickering over results) will be the one to do the replacing (plus the three months of bickering in the Senate).

I have heard that Chile is a very nice place to visit at this time of year, though.

Hello
You think the composition of the Supreme Court is off limits? It is quite likely that the next president will appoint at least 3 justices. If W wins, the Federalist Society will have gone from a club of dorks in law school who sat around drinking Coors beer and eating California table grapes for laughs into the most influential legal organization in the US. Your buddy drudge seems to think Rehnquist's health is newsworthy:

Hello
Don't. Chileans hate this administration. A lifelong Republican friend of mine who lives in Santiago will not be voting Republican this election. Well, he'd vote Republican if he could, but he can't in 2004. No one can.

Exactly. Keep them attacking over there, not here. Thanks for proving my point for me.

It is tragic to lose even one american soldier. It is also tragic to lose 3,000 american civilians on 9/11. However, the only way to stop these animals is to fight back. And to build democracy so that their barbaric culture is reformed by western values.

They are barbaric animals and understand only force. Go live there if you don't believe me. You'll see what you are dealing with then. But you live in safety here where you can mouth off on internet boards.

So if we have another disputed election, it is possible that the SCT will be deadlocked at 4-4? Who breaks that tie?

Its easy for you armchair generals to sit around posting on internet board criticizing the US forces in Iraq. I wonder how it feels to read this kind of crap when you put your life on the line serving your country? I don't know because I don't do it. Neither do you. The difference is that I don't criticize those who do.

Its not even up for debate. The Dems have to use Rehnquist's illness to hammer home the point that Bush will likely get to pick a nominee. Its not despicable to cite the fact that these justices are old and may retire. They know their age; I doubt they'll be offended.

Its funny how the kill-em-all GOP folks get so Hallmarky sensitive and overly-reverent on issues such as Mary Cheney's sexual orientation and Rehnquist's age. This sounds pretty damn funny coming from the people who brought us "Willie Horton". It would be criminally stupid for the Dems not to hammer on the Justice replacement issue with such a perfect opportunity at their feet.

I'm not criticizing troop movements and strategic goals. Securing arms is pretty basic.

And aside from the military criticism, the military has known about the missing explosives since Spring of '03. Why did Rice only find out about this a month ago?
