It's a weekend thing, and sometimes even that is dicey.

I agree that technology has made in-home movie watching much more comfortable and relaxing in most cases, but does this mean you never go out for a movie now? Sometimes I get more enjoyment from the movie when the group dynamic kicks in.

It's pretty much accepted in my house that there is a 50/50 chance we will not actually watch a rental after paying for it. Sleep is just such a better deal most of the time.

I went to see maybe five movies last year at the theater -- "event" movies with lots of effects that are better on a big screen with thx or dolby digital.

I am really looking forward to the Matrices.

Speaking as one of the "remember, back before kids, when we did movie theaters?" group, sometimes when you get the kids to bed, the very last thing you want to experience is a "group dynamic". By about 9:00 p.m., I'm about "group dynamic'ed" out.

(Besides, big-screen with 600 watts RMS into five speakers and a powered sub kicks ass. Bathroom breaks on your schedule, popcorn on demand, a good wine, maybe a quick snack out of the oven - beats sticky seats, crying kids, cell-phone users, ten dollar tix, and "previews" any day.)

Me too.

But really, it's all about the movie-theater popcorn. When I get a major craving, I go.

Which also explains my frequent summer attendance at sweetly hokey small-town fairs--sometimes, I just need a really good Sno-Cone.

I haven't seen a movie in a theater since maybe Titanic,* but we bought the Jackass DVD with additional footage and "outtakes." (I thought the whole thing was sort of outtakes?) Anyway, it's pretty good stuff. Also, I think I have matured a bit since my crush has shifted from Party Boy to Bam Margera.

*Outright lie. I saw Jackass in the theater, but the movie prior to Jackass may well have been Titanic.

If you have to respond to AdL at all (and I cannot imagine why you would), can you do me a great favor and not quote him? It gets defeats the purpose of my ignoring him. And for any of you geniuses who plan to ruin my AdL lignoring going forward, there is room for you on the list.

The new Vin Diesel movie would seem to fit that bill, and the trailer a saw a few weeks ago almost made it look intriguing (like it perhaps had an actual plot), although the subsequent tv advertising is not so hopeful. Either way, there will be lots of things blown up without real purpose:bang:, and probably several women objectified.

You forgot more comfortable seating with greater legroom, and you can fast-forward through the "commercials".

Apropos of, uh, incidentally -- did anyone else see this article in USA Today?

http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/...movieads_x.htm

[Spree: Article on lawsuit against movie theaters for showing commercials before the film. Plaintiff trying for class-action status. No cost to subscribe, but they request birth year + zip code]

Movie Night Clarification

Kafka-ette and I regularly go to the movies (a/k/a Date Night), leaving kafka-tot at home to torment the babysitter, so we are fairly current on date-night movies (I loved "ten ways to lose a guy," and was one of only two fonts of testosterone in the otherwise estrogen-filled theater . . .).

In sum, am looking for current "movies for guys who like movies" recs.
Under those parameters, I'd go for either The Core (bunch of guys going deep into the earth to detonate nuclear bombs), The Hunted (Tommy Lee Jones hunts down Benico Del Toro, psycho marine that kills people even though war is over (sic)), or Lord of the Rings (assuming you haven't seen it and you have the three hours to kill).

I go to the theater all the time. I love the whole movie going experience. Probably at least twice a month, sometimes more.

After the first child, in my case. And then, of course, once I was allowed to venture back into the big dark places with $5 diet sodas, and people who talk on their cell phones, it was only for animated Pixar or Disney features with lots of smiles and singing and happy happy happy people who could only be tolerated with lots of xanax because of the fucking kid I can't smoke dope any more... oh NOOOOOOOO......

ummm, the Piglet movie is nice.
