Not to jump in, and perhaps more appropriate to the politics board, but I don't like it when any law creates a restriction as to whether I cannot now indulge in behavior in a place where traditionally such behavior has been allowed.
In fairness, slave's position may be similar, and while I would not presume to speak for him, I think these policy matters are much more appropriately addressed by the management of the establishment than by the local lawmakers. Besides, most establishments of a certain size have made arrangements to accomodate both groups without infringing (too much) on the rights of either one.

More government interference. Just what we need.
This silly law not only imposes restrictions on bar owners and deprives them of additional business, but in some instances, acts as an virtual "taking", as many owners recently installed "smoking rooms" with separate ventilation systems to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars, only to now learn that such rooms do not comply with the drafted code and are now rendered useless.
I find it utterly amazing that the loudest proponents of this restriction are people that seldom go to bars in the first place.

I heart you -- but not in the, you know, squicky way, NTTAWWT, just not my gig. Come to my house and you get cats and dogs -- if you don't like cats and dogs and have not yet taught your children to respect animals and other people's shit don't come to my fucking house. And don't come over and then complain because you are alergic to cats -- take a Benadryl you pussy, you know I have cats.

Yeah, but from someone who I also suspect would select children based on the color of her outfit for the day, I can't get too excited by your judgment here. As I said - we only get snippets here - but I rarely see such a calculating and cold-blooded approach.
Of course, it could be Penske, or FoF.

Why would you find this utterly amazing? A big reason that a lot of the people who seldom go to bars in the first place don't go is because of all the cigarette smoke and the lasting impression it leaves on your clothes, hair, eyes, etc.
I don't find this surprising at all. (You don't have to agree or disagree with the enactment of the law to see this point, do you?)

Actually, I let the hubby handle that shit. I don't like the whole hitting thing, and was never hit as a child, but I know people who were (including my hubby -- not beaten, just disciplined) and they don't seem particularly fucked up by it. I must say that it tendsed to get a more positive response then when I kept trying to "talk to" the Little Fan about things. I guess an occasional pop on the ass isn't all that bad. Of course, now taking away the PS2 from his playroom works better than if I beat him with a cast-iron skillet.

No, my next screen name, should I choose to invent one, will contain the word empress or princess or chick or babe or hottie or sexpot or vavoom or classylady or something similar, so that I convey a sexy image, not an ambiguously-gendered one.

Smokin' in the Boys Room
When I moved from California back to Texas, it took me awhile to get used to the smoke in bars. The whole "smoking, non smoking" question at restaurants still sort of throws me for a loop. I've since adjusted back to smokey bars and have been known to procure cigarettes in bars, even though I'm a non/never have been smoker.
I do, however, still immediately hop in the shower when I come home from a smokey bar to get the smell out of my hair, and my dry cleaning bill is much higher in smokey jurisdictions than non-smokey jurisdictions.
Anecdotally, a very good friend of mine just quit her bartending job for a variety of reasons. She's an ex-smoker, and she said that her smoker's cough came back with a vengance when she was working at the bar. She was particularly concerned about the smoke because she and her boyfriend are trying to get pregnant. Her bar had recently bought something to absorb / get rid of/ eat the smoke, but it wasn't that helpful.
I would love to see a voluntary smoke-free bar to open up around here, just to see how it would fly. That said, there are a LOT of outdoor beer garden / ice houses that make it pretty easy for everyone to get along.

Assigning the name Wayne does lower the bar somewhat. If you really want your child to to get ahead, it appears you should consider moving to Germany or naming your child Gumby

Calculated and cold-blooded? Shit, thanks. I am gonna take that as a compliment. It may seem calculated and cold-blooded, but at least my kid isn't going to end up pulling a heist on your house after knocking up your daughter (I hope). The Little Fan is happy and loved and he knows it. I constantly reinforce how much I love him, how smart he is, how good he is (when he is) and how happy I am to be his mom, etc. Teaching him to respect other people, their shit and animals is not, in my opinion, bad-parenting -- quite the opposite. But this is me and my way. I don't tell other people how to do it. I have, however, shared with you how I do it and thus expect that some people, like yourself, will have an opinion and I can take it. I may even learn something from your comments (shudder). No, really. No, not really. No, really.
Thrashers(there is no fool-proof way to do it, but I didn't need a book to create the Little Fan so I figure I don't need one to raise him)Fan

My God, I miss that character. He was the Best Villain Ever. "There's more than one way to skin a cat. I happen to know that that's true." That the actor's name is Harry Groener helps.
Until I checked out the TwoP recaplet, I wasn't bothered by the continuity error of Spike telling Buffy she was right all along, when he was in Gilroy (Gilroy! Gilroy!) at the time. Now it's eating at me, in addition to the fact that if Spike and Andrew had actually ridden from the supposed location of Sunnydale to the actual location of Gilroy on a motorcycle, both of them would have been carrying their nuts in a Styrofoam cup by the time they got back.
But this is counterbalanced by the thought that if I should ever lose an eye, I'll still be able to slice off a piece of fine ass on the kitchen floor.
Bonus from TwoP for American Idol fans: "Paula says that she thought Joshua was good, but he needs to be more 'free' onstage. That's not likely to happen unless the show is fortunate enough to get a laxative as a sponsor."
