Spanky, I'm beginning to be concerned that you put too much emphasis on the people you date to define your own self-worth. You're becoming like the 50s housewife defined entirely by her husband's job. Try developing the "Spanky" persona without resorting to your paramours.

GWNC- I'm still waiting for Str8 to clarify the impact of being a known face from Canadian television. since canada is smaller, I suppose it might be like a cult following, just w/o the homogenous weirdness from the cult followers.

I would guess that German popularity is less valuable than Canadian. Like Jerry Lewis relies on the telethon and swelled head- the French popularity probably does not move him up.

The place where this started was with booking guests for the tonight show. Then it was how much you got paid to show up at partys. Paris Hilton gets $100,000.

For the tonight Show an A lister goes on whenver they want to go on.

B listers they try and book as much as possible. But they chase the B listers.

C listers are used to fill space left by the B listers. So C listers are still called and asked to be on the show.

D listers are called when they need someone at the last minute. They are on standby. Kathy Griffin did this for years for talk shows etc.

This is also the order in which they appear on the Tonight show.

All peripheral jobs in the entertainement industry are list add ons. He is an B list Accountant (he works for B lists types). He is a C list attorney (he represents C types). He is a A list agent (Ovits) etc.

Really? Not even one episode? I have not seen many, but they were in reruns for a good long time. And the other night, my bf and I watched Wrath of Khan. It has some excellent moments.

They might have seen some, but it just never came up in conversation. Like I would focus more on any anal, beastiality, caladar work, etc. in talking about their pasts. I can say I have never watched an episode with a date.

So I am psyching up for my third football game this year. How excited am I? So excited that I am not getting any work done, am checking the weather constantly, and trying to decide whether I should get a pedi today or tomorrow.

Sadly, my boy will not be playing as he had promised 2 weeks ago when I booked this flight. I will still wear his jersey though and try not to spill too much beer this time.

Anyhow, it got me to wondering how it is that I pick up a book: For me, usually it's either word of mouth, I liked the description on the back cover, or I read something about it. I get irritated a lot lately in bookstores because they don't have internet terminals where I can look up the name of an author or a title from whatever blog or article I'd seen the book mentioned.

Do readings or hearing commentaries on the radio help? Does the blog of the author help? Is it a matter of where the book is placed in the bookstores? Is it a question of figuring out how to get yourself on the Daily Show?

We were just discussing this last night at my neighborhood book club. We were wondering why "Peace Like a River" (Minnesota-based novel written by Minnesotan) achieved NYT bestseller status and still has a better Amazon sales rank than books written by Lorna Landvik, another Minnesota writer who writes about Minnesota and the Midwest' (though "Angry Housewives Eating BonBons" and "Oh My Stars" have been regional bestsellers).

We reached the obvious conclusion that getting mentioned on NPR (as was Peace Like a River) or a TV show is a bigger factor than how good the book actually is.

I am drawn by a book's cover design -- I picked up "BreakupBabe" (another blog-based book) purely on the basis of its comic book look cover. Good cover design plus seeing a book face up (rather than spine out) on a front table or rack at Barnes & Noble will draw me in. I also pay attention to the staff favorites at B&N.

If I were being published, I'd try to find someone who knows the national book buyer for CostCo and get an advanced readers copy into her hands. I think she picks books other than just from bestseller lists.

Now that I've read Allyson's site and the chapter of her book, she should have a ton of chits to call in for marketing help and not just cover blurbs. If Whedon and Minear don't try to get her on a couple late shows, they are complete ingrates! I'm also a sucker for a great title and hers didn't grab me, maybe because I didn't discover the series until the movie.
