Steakhouse Question

Don't go off on a tangent and act like it is the main aspect of the discussion -- and yes, I see it's a footnote. The point I was making was that they essentially cut a tomato and an onion three times and act like they've done something. The "acting like they've done something" includes the ridiculous price for the slicing.

No one is arguing that people who go to a steakhouse are comparing the prices on everything and trying to see which appetizer gives them the best value. As an overall point, I don't know why one would pass up the other appetizers in favor of a tomato. Maybe one is in the mood for a tomato. I don't know. But these idiots who sit around and spout off about how amazing the thick cut tomato and onion salad are look like jackasses to me.

And I've tasted these salads. They are not amazing or at least they were not amazing when I tried them. They were tomatoes and onions and tasted like tomatoes and onions.

Omaha Steaks are pretty damn tasty. filet.

I think it is known that everyone goes to those places for the steaks. So, yes if you're going off about how great the salad is, you are lame.

OK, Ceej, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, alternatives, please? Whole Food filets were fine.

They're terrible. Wet, flavorless, and overpriced. At least the tomato and onion salad tastes like tomato and onion. Omaha steaks taste like Omaha, but not steak.

I assumed it relates to the logistical challenges of getting a good, fresh tomato and onion both into, and served in, Manhattan. Much like the reasoning behind a Red Delicious apple costing $7.50 in Oahu.

That's an awesome idea. Activity for the next FB outing?

I take that to be a sucker play for the Japanese tourists, who probably gorge themselves on apples at that low, low price.

I am with you 100% on this. If I had outdoor space and a grill, I'd never go to a steakhouse, unless someone else was payin'.

I do not go to steakhouses for steaks, because I don't eat steaks. But I sometimes go to steakhouses.

In my opinion, steakhouses frequently have really good oysters. Down here, most steakhouses get really good stone crabs.

I like the tomato salads and the wedge of iceberg lettuce salads. I do not behave as if they are anything other than salads.

Hey, TM. My brother gave me a Keurig coffeemaker for Hanukkah. It makes a cup of coffee so good it makes me gleeful. I think even you'd drink coffee if you had one of these thingies.

Our office has the industrial/corporate version of that, with individual K-Cups. 'Tis not bad.at.all.

This is what I originally thought as well. A truly fresh tomato that hasn't had the flavor genetically bred out of it so that it is bigger and looks nicer in the supermaket is rarely overrated. However, when I tried someone's salad at Luger's, I was surprised to find that the tomato they used was really no big deal, even with the delicate mix of fresh pepper and oil and vinegar. I think it's a scam the restaurants are pulling on idiots with too much money and they laugh every time they prepare an order in the back.

I very rarely make it to steak houses for the same reason as stated by Ty. The only exception is that I've been hanging out at a a new Churrascaria that recently opened near me. I think that's a different sort of experience, though, but a pretty damned tasty one.
