Sure. Hiring a full time nurse/nanny/doula (sp?) to be there for a week or two after the birth. Not inviting your mother to stay for two weeks after the birth, unless that's what your wife wants. Planning a tropical getaway for the latest point at which the expectant mom can travel and enjoy herself. Bringing a masseuse, pedicurist, or hair stylist in when mom still feels too housebound to go out without baby for several hours. Having a jacuzzi installed. Promising that the minivan will be "your" car, while she gets to keep driving the roomy yet still stylish four door sedan. Investigating the child care options for when her maternity leave is up. Being supportive when she says she wants to stay home.
Of course, I'm not a mom, so I'm just speculating.

Agreed. I just think any gift would feel like payment at that time.
And, depending on the kid, not necessarily a fair price (thanks, SS).

Sure she does. Brian Leetch in a different shade of blue, and Ronnie Francis playing for his boyhood favorite.

Oddly enough, I have a much, much easier time dealing with this than with Matthew Barnaby wearing that blue-purple sweater. Hopefully, we'll resign him after the playoffs as a FA and give him the captain "C"
On a related note, it's great to see Sandy McCarthy back.

Just for the record, I did not support this man or his organization:

I usually do the cheek, but most of my female friends do the lip to lip hello. I sometimes kiss the cheek anyway, and I've often wondered if its rude to do so if the other person may be expecting the lip to lip service.

How about getting her a gym membership?

I don't think this is an etiquette rule. A former co-worker bought his wife a little piece of jewelry that had the birthstone of their first child and gave it to her. Back in some long ago discussion, I mentioned I thought this was a nice gesture to say, as Sebby suggested, "I love you and our new child." TM, as expected, vehemently disagreed.
Thurgreed may be confusing it with my discussion of taking my BIL shopping for a Christmas gift for my sister in which I insisted he buy her a piece of jewelry (again, nothing on the scale of a Rolex, just something more considerate than his usual clueless trick of getting her a box of chocolates and then ragging on her weight so he gets to eat them all, which he did for Valentine's Day because I forgot to call him in time).
ETA: Gwinky would be Thurgreed's ideal woman if she wasn't already taken.

Curiously, you sound like a mom who's really pissed off at what her husband didn't do for her.
Tip to whoever it was: Pawn the rolex. Unless you're in Philly, you can get more than 50 bucks for it. Buy one of RP's suggestions.

Maybe you should get your sister a divorce lawyer. He doesn't sound clueless, he sounds like a prick. A husband who "rags on" his wife's weight isn't worth having.

edited to note that I now have Paul Anka in my head, thank you very much.

Why do you think I sound pissed? Other than the bold your mother, which, admittedly, has some, uh, resonance.

But why would your default presumption be that the intention was one of payment for services rather than "here's an engraveable token to commorate this terrific event"? I can see thinking that about some gifts in some situations (e.g.: rolling over after felatio and saying "that was great baby, here's a diamond bracelet, let me call you a cab"), but this doesn't seem like one of them to me.

Or you just write that on the re: line of a check.
