No, it's like the "invitations" rule: issue one, and if the person doesn't make a counter offer (or accept), you have made all the effort required of you and can stop. If you are desperate to maintain/establish a relationslhip, you can issue up to three without acceptance/reciprocal invitations, but after the 3rd you are obligated to stop, because you are pestering a person who has affirmatively expressed a lack of interest. 3 regretfully rejected invitations is civil-eze for "piss off, I want nothing to do with you, you stalker."

Similarly with cards & notes and such. If they don't send one back, you can stop. If they don't send one back after you've sent 3, you SHOULD stop. And if anyone bitches about it later, you can say with all confidence, "oh, you never wrote back, so I assumed your silence meant you were ignoring me to break things off." All social etiquette is based on the idea of reciprocity - no one has duties to anyone else who doesn't have reciprocal obligations to them, and the abandonment of the obligations on one side relieves the other. (NB: Reciprocity does not mean equivalence.)

I tend to send out cursory Christmas cards to a wider group, though, just so they have my address in case anyone wants to die and leave me their fortune.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I don't know what I did before I found this board. Miss Manners must have had a fucking twinge in her head everytime I made a move. I am gonna save a lotta jack by not sending out all of these awful fucking cards. Fuck it, I won't even do Christmas anymore -- they don't need my address because I don't know anybody with money anyway (except me, of course). No, really! No, not really. Woohoo, I feel like a weight has been lifted. All of these people who are "related" to me only because their son had the luck to marry me can fuck off.

Why do in-laws always say stupid shit like "call me mom" or the like? You are not my mom. I don't even like my own mom so why the hell would I want another. I have met you like three times, fuck I don't even feel real comfortable using your first name. Shit, I shoulda just stayed single.

Are you my sock? We were probably, at least, best friends in law school.

I had a birthday "forgotten" before too. It sucked, but hey I got over it. I suggest you do so too. Life is too short.

Wow. Between this and the Tucker Max sex lawsuit, the Palm Beach Post is definitely the place to go for hard-hitting investigative journalism.

I'm shocked. Shocked. Please somebody tell me how there can possibly be sugar in Milky Way or Malt Ball frozen yogurt!

And you thought there was racism on AI

Or, as I think is the case in many instances, I think the "race" freak out with the OJ verdict was a displaced money/economic power freak out. But if all the bad feeling and sense of social discomfort that the trial caused is mistaken for racial tension, making everybody nerveous and suspicious of each because of racial differences, when they should really be thinking about what the whole thing said about economic differences.
It's not so much money as simply OJ's iconic status. Burger coverred that better, with fewer words to boot.

And there's something to Thurgreed's constant refrain of race, enough to give a certain persuasiveness to the saying that race is to America what caste is to India and class is to England.

My mother "forgets" my birthday every year. I suspect it has something to do with denial about her own age. When my sister made her a grandma, Mom was more than a little pissed.

Thumbs up Confidence

I saw Confidence this evening and enjoyed it. I have a weakness for crime films, and a bigger weakness for Rachel Weisz, which might account for my response.

X-men 2 was OK too...better than the first, but I don't think I liked it as much as everyone else.

You are a haiku retard. How hard is it to count to five?

SPOILER BELOW

Best moment of the show was at tribal council where Heidi said that she deserved to win b/c she was a such a good player that the remaining men were all terrified of her. Yeah, they looked petrified when you were still in the first stage of the immunity challenge trying to untie those hard knots (I hope you didn't ruin your manicure) and they were already done with the challenge. Seriously, she never won a single individual challenge -- what would they be scared of? Maybe they were petrified her oversized implants would melt when their camp burned down - burned plastic smells awful.

Survivor

Can someone explain to me why that horrible whining bitch (yes, I know I said it's sexist and I barely ever use it--it was that or the "c-word") Jenna has survived this long? (1) she's not that pretty, but is constantly saying how beautiful she is and how men are so intimidated by her Aphrodite-ness; (2) she complains whenever she loses, so that she gets an entirely unfair result for herself, like when whatsername paid $300 for a letter from home at an auction and Jenna, who'd blown all her cash on peanut butter and chocolate, sobbed until everyone agreed to give her hers too, thus obviating whatsername's sacrifice; (3) I honestly cannot recall anything useful she's done.

Many thanks for any enlightenment.
