Vonage and other VoiP lines don't work so well with Tivo or with burglar alarms.

I eventually went with Vonage for my primary line and got a secondary Bell South line (for like $9.95/mpnth) for my Tivo and burglar alarm.
Apparently they can't hook up the gate/buzzer to my cell.

Thanks.

Most times someone "needs" a landline, that means not Vonage/VOIP--in your case, I doubt the buzzer would work through VOIP, but I don't really know anything. Based on what I've heard about RCN, I'd avoid them. Which pretty much leaves SBC/ATT in Chicago.

The SBC/ATT website is really unhelpful for basic service. But, I've had surprisingly nice and helpful folks at telephone customer service. The one annoying thing is that they constantly try to sell all the other services you don't have--Dish Network, Cingular Wireless, DSL--they do take no for an answer, but always sound disappointed. Cost should be about $10-15 a month, with outrageous per call charges ($.30 or more) if you make any outgoing calls.

SBC has a deal like bnb mentioned - around $9.99 a month but you can't make long distance calls and I think you're limited to like 25 outbound local calls a month.

For your purposes, though, could be the cheapest option.

2. (actually I think I suggested that). Almost all phone cos. have a limited use plan that's pretty cheap. You can't make too many calls, but who cares for your buzzer on incoming calls? In some places it's called "lifeline" service.

Actually, I can use Vonage. I just checked. That has to be the answer for $15/month (500 minutes outgoing).

Thanks, everyone.

Am I fucked?

Too much internet porn?

You were fucked the day you bought it. It's just that now the chickens are coming home to roost.

Can you boot from a boot CD/dvd?

I had the same problem on my HP and booting from the CD solved it.

I hate to ask whether you had a recent backup. Remember when you reload Windows XP you will have to go in manually to add the Backup program, if you need it. It's not a default.

Good luck!

No recent back-up, but there really isn't anything important on it anyway.

Thanks.

I can boot from the cd/dvd drive, but, for some reason, my admin password isn't working (and it's required to "repair"). Crap. Anyway to circumvent the password or reset it?

Still can't get into Safe Mode.

Ran chkdsk, and it told me something was wrong. Thanks, chkdsk!

Plaxo for the Mac

For all you Plaxo users with macs at home, Plaxo has finally released a version for OSx. I have installed it and it integrates perfectly with address book and mail (I don't use Entourage, so I can't speak to Entourage integration).

Is it easy to replace a hard drive? I can get a Seagate 250GB HD for $79.99

ETA: yeah, I completely fucked things up. Deleted my C Drive partition, etc.

Next up is replacing my sump pump!
