So I'm in the process of finally uploading my entire music collection to itunes when I come across an old Brand New Heavies cd. There are a number of good songs on it that I had forgotten, but none hotter than Soulflower. For those who don't know, Brand New Heavies is a band that plays mostly funk riffs and teamed up with a number of rap artists to make Heavy Rhyme Experience. While I love the original Soulflower, I'm digging the live band version. The hotness. I don't know if you can download it anywhere, but you should check it out (or rediscover it, as the case may be).

Take heart. It's not that bad. I might have been a little Clintonian in my interpretation of what is covered by the word "used."

That was the first of my suspensions...

You look like a plumber? Must reformulate mental image now. Hard to reconcile plumberesque runner, but I'll do it I'm sure.

Sixth grade. I got in trouble becuase I got into an abortion debate with a nun. To the best of my recollection, I'd never heard the debate before, but it just seemed to me that there were extenuating circumstances that could forgive getting an abortion. I think I'd recently started having my period, and I knew that I could technically get pregnant at that point, and I knew that there was no way I was going to have a baby if I did.
My sister got in trouble when she was in eighth grade for reading the Secret Diary of Laura Palmer during a film in religion class. Same nun, though by that point she'd left the convent. The ex-nun, shocked and outraged at the content of the book, confiscated the book and sent a note home to my mother, who surely would be just as appalled. My mother wrote back that they'd been trying to get my sister to read on her own for years and that she could read whatever she wanted to. The stationary that my mom wrote the note on said "bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch" on the top. My mother hand delivered the note because she knew my sister would get in further trouble if she'd sent it through my sister.

That is the CD that turned me on to the Pharcyde, although I later became alienated when I found out that Soul Flower is a euphemism for the devil's weed. The Grand Puba song on that CD is so funky, it hurts.

Anyone who suggests an Ed Burns movie will recieve scorn unlike any that has been heretofore witnessed. Scorn!

Does Daytrippers count? It's partially set in Long Island.

Published?
How does one start the process of getting an article or essay published in print? Not a law-related article, but rather a socio-economic essay on American culture, etc. Just send it out to anyone and everyone in the magazine industry? I know it's a long shot but, what the hell? Gotta at least try.

I assumed Soul FLower was a black woman's clit. that would go with the Grand Pube song in terms of theme. what is devil's weed?

My best friend from junior high and high school is gay (natch...), and he told me he knew that he was gay for as long as he can remember -- as young as kindergarten. I think mileage may vary for this particular feature. (He is the ONLY person from high school that I still talk to -- God, high school sucked. But back to the riveting story.)
In high school, he was routinely called a fag (obviously, because it was high school). I, of course, would refute such claims by oh-so-articulately declaring, "Nuh- uh!!" (remember, it was high school) "You're just saying that because he plays the flute!" [Insert sophomoric joke here about how he plays the meat flute -- my husband has a horrible influence on me -- I'm so ashamed...]
When he "came out" to me, I just sort of shrugged and said "Oh." He was vastly relieved (I wasn't really surprised -- in fact, I was almost offended that he thought I might have a negative reaction!), but the first thing I thought about was all the breath I wasted on leveling charges of flutism against the name-callers. On balance, I guess I'd do the same thing again, though.

Trunk Funk Classics is a good overview for the uninitiated (and you can buy it through Amazon). Coincidently, I have the Saturday Nite remix with Mos Def playing right now.
N'Dea Davenport, who was their singer for a few albums, is still amazing. I heard her on a DJ Krush track last year and it blew me away.

Who makes the loot? (Grand Puba). He must have done something bad concerning some skinz because he disappeared. I guess what goes around comes back around again. He should have just slowed down.
