The weight difference is small in absolute terms, but quite significant in perceived effort to shlep around.

They're back
Best Buy has added Apple computers in seven stores and it's considering expanding Mac sales across the chain, Best Buy Senior Vice President for Merchandising David Morrish said at the company's annual meeting on Wednesday.
Morrish said the test began four weeks ago.
Best Buy stopped selling Apple computers in 1998 because of slow sales, and soon after Apple pulled out of most retailers.

NAS
I just added a Buffalo LinkStation 250 GB NAS to my home network. Awesome solution all around. Although there is some chatter about a 32 character file name limit using OSX, there is an easy work-around: the NAS has a built-in FTP client, which is not bound by the character limit (the limit is apparently Finder-only). I FTP'd my entire iTunes folder (30 gb or so, for now), including may files whose names are more than 32 characters, and all transfered over and play beautifully from the LinkStation.

Interesting. Two questions:
1) Why not just use an external HD for iTunes?
2) Why does Buffalo not include a firewire port that would allow easy storage expansion?

Because all of our computers are notebooks and all conenct wirelessly. There was nothing to connect an externall HDD to. Using a NAS solution gives me the ability to access our iTunes library from any machine, anywhere on our wireless network.

There is a USB 2.0 port specifically for that purpose. I would have preferred Firewire 800, but this will do.

I figured so much. Is it possible to share libraries through iTunes? (that is, how does one do it, effectively)?

The library sits on the NAS. Then each iTunes "client" points to the iTunes library on the NAS. Works very nicely.

You know, it's funny. I had actually been thinking about the new macbook. Even took one for a test drive last week. Then, after shelling out another $80 for the fourth power cord my daughter has needed for her powerbook in as many years, she tells me that it isn't charging and we have to bring it in. So, for the seventh time (and the second completely new computer) we head off to the Apple store, and we find out that (1) she's going to need a new battery for $120 and (2) they need to send it off yet again for two weeks to replace yet another part.
So tell me again about how superior Apples are to PCs, won't you, please?

Here's my question: Which variable should the study control for: the brand of computer or the type of daughter?

The daughter is very meticulous when it comes to taking care of her things. She has been known to iron the dresses on her American Girl dolls.

Whoops. We just bought a MacBook last night (the $1299 white one -- didn't feel like spending an extra $200 to get a black one). Of course, we did get the AppleCare or whatever they call it extended warranty thingy. Hope we don't need it, but shit happens.
Question though -- how do you get the browser to open as a full screen? Frustrating -- I am used to clicking the middle button on the upper right of the screen to maximize. I'm sure that there is an easy answer, but my 15 minutes of screwing around with it when I brought it home last night didn't reveal it.
And how does Office for OX work? I am going to order a copy from the apple store online (the reseller didn't have it in stock) -- older brother Not Nick assures me that it will work fine, but he drank the Steve Jobs Kool Aid about 20 years ago, so he would say that. I've seen some reviews suggest that it's a bit slow and buggy.

I had read that with the newest version they cleaned up a lot of the bugs, but one of the Apple users would probably be better able to address this question. One of the big advantages of the new macbooks is that with the intel processor, they can run on either OSX or Windows. You could load Windows and run Office on that.
