They actually need to ban this?

I've seen plenty of old people with tatoos on beaches, particularly California and Hawaii. You know, the "old surfer dude" types. Old tats aren't pretty -- that black/green mush that it turns into. Of course, it's usually covering up old scraggly skin, too, that's seen too much sun. But they don't really seem to care. All they want are some tasty waves and a cool buzz, and they're fine.
I don't have a problem with tattoos and piercings per se--hell, I have two tattoos and a navel ring myself. But no one in my daily life sees them unless they are seeing me pretty close to naked anyway. Does not affect my daily life and won't as I age.

My question was the really out there body art that actually impedes one's daily life. An old tat on a saggy hip? Who cares. No one sees it in every day life. A face tat or spaced ears? That's right out there in the open for fricking life. Normal piercings close or become far less noticable over time if allowed to heal. Spacers do not--the skin is stretched and looks rEcockulous (IMHO).

What particularly bewilders me about "tribal" tattoos is people getting tattoos from tribes they've never seen nor heard of, like my beloved cousin. You're a goddamn WASP who has never set foot outside a gated community; what tribe?! Traders of Wall Street?!

This is an interesting illustration of an argument I made on the Politics Board. Basically, the term "victimless crime" is meaningless as applied to stupid things you do to yourself that have permanent consequences, like huffing. When you do something to ABBA 2003 that will have an effect on ABBA 2023, whom you've never met, you're engaging in an act with moral repercussions, because you're saddling ABBA 2023 with the consequences. This doesn't always mean "victimless" crimes should be illegal, or that tattooing is appropriately classed as a victimless "crime," but it helps us to understand why some things are taboo even when we consent to them on any given individual day (e.g., incest between adults, in the case of the Politics Board). The consequences are too lasting for society to allow it, even if society values the individual freedom to harm oneself.

I agree with ABBA that the other thing to consider is that tattoos look really good only on taut, tan, young flesh. Tattoo parlors should have pasty cellulite simulators.

I have a friend who used to belong to a . . . social club out west, and he had the insignia tattoo'ed across and all around his neck, well above collar height.

He's now older, wiser, and clubless, but has had trouble (obviously) because of this. He has looked into removal (colors are still vivid, and the removers say they can't get it all out), and finds dress shirts with higher-than-normal collars, but it still shows. He's a stockbroker now, and he needs to meet with cients if he wants to grow, but he's sort of stuck at the talk-to-them-on-the-phone stage because of this.

He says he ALMOST got the facial tat, but, as he says, he "just missed that trainwreck."

Tatoos

What I usually see are the tatoos on the side of the neck. I think women gang bangers get this and teenagers trying to look "cool." What they don't seem to understand is that this pretty much limits your occupational pool to kitchen worker, Tower Records or night janitor.

Apparently Britney Spears and Tamryn Manning got matching tattoos while working on Crossroads. The tattoos were a Japanese symbol meaning "mysterious." Amusing enough on an actress and a pop tart.

When Manning was in Japan, she showed someone her tattoo and learned that it actually means "strange."

Even(this is exactly why I researched chinese calligraphy when the OM thought about getting a new tat to honor part of his heritage.)Odds

OK, did a bit of googling. Seems that body piercers and those who perform other modifications do the slicing and stiching. There are some really gross images out there. Why people feel the need to cut, mutilate, modify, stetch, and poke themselves is beyond me.

Here's a mild image. Kind of creepy. The most disturbing image had to do with fingernail modifications. Yes, it appears that they cut the skin away and extended the finger nail area back to the area of the first knuckle. I had to look it away, I was getting queasy.

Too much of a chicken to get a tattoo of my own.

Edited to remove queasy image. See post #5774 for a link if you are really curious. WARNING: The images are quite disturbing. Sorry if I offended anyone.

This reminds me of my college roommate who was -- get this -- a womens studies major. This brilliant speciman went to a tattoo shop her senior year and picked out "the womens symbol" and asked that it be tattooed on her butt. She actually selected the symbol from those available and displayed on the wall. She did not ask the tattoo artist to interpret what it was she wanted.

I am not positive if she ever really forgave me for my reaction upon seeing her new tattoo. "Why the fuck did you get a fertility symbol on your ass?"

since when has concerns about high-quality care and hygiene stopped anyone from mutilating their bodies in various ways?

I wonder how much the tattoo business would suffer if they truly could enforce the "no drunks" rules or had some waiting period, like states insist on for abortions.

This has to interfere with eating dessert. Ergo, I would never do it.

Aside from the fact that her tongue looks like a really fat snake's.

The "no drunks" rule is partly so the newly tattooed can't sue the tattoo artist based on a drunk defense and partly because alcohol thins the blood and makes it really hard to get a good tattoo.

I think most people have thought out their tattoos long before they enter the shop. They may be more motivated when intoxicated, but it isn't usually a brand new thought.
