Picture file size?

Reducing the pixel dimensions should do what you want.
Do you have iPhoto?

That's what I thought, but it didn't work when I used irfanview.
No iPhoto.

Well, at least you admit the errors of your ways.
From the irfanview site:
- Q: How to reduce saved file size from XX to YY KB?
A: There is no one-click solution for that, sorry.
1. Open an image.
2. Go to menu Image->Resize/Resample and reduce the image dimensions in pixels.
3. Go to menu File->Save as, choose JPG and save as new file (see also JPG save options like: lower JPG quality, uncheck EXIF, etc.).
4. Look at the file size of the new file. If still too big, repeat the steps, using smaller pixel size and/or lower quality, etc.
X. For many images, use File->Batch Conversion, Advanced options.

Aha! It didn't work with irfanview - working within that program I couldn't change the quality of the jpeg. But I could save it at a lower quality in PhotoBase, which I never knew was on my PC and which otherwise seems fairly useless. Thank you.
I am fairly quickly turning into one of those people who will need my kid to program my electronics. Hell, I will soon need my kid to reset the clocks after a power failure ... all of that little stuff is such a pain in the ass now that I only have time to, uh, spare when I'm in the office.

Windows help
In a misguided effort to free up space on my hard drive I must have deleted something essential. Now the display on my monitor is all screwed up -- everything i s huge, and the pages scroll oddly, like I didn't set the horizontal hold on an old TV. I can't remember what I deleted. Anybody have a clue? The geeks on call guy is coming tomorrow for other reasons, but I have some work I get done tonight.
And I don't want to contaminate my new Macbook with work yet.
ETA -- see what I mean? My display is so fucked I couldn't see that I made a new thread.

At the risk of sounding like the helpdesk, are you in Safe Mode? (there should be little lables that say safe mode on your desktop). If so, try rebooting.
If not, this actually sounds like a settings problem rather than a deleted something problem (although it may be that you deleted a driver, but that isn't easy to do). Again, to point out the obvious, go to the control panel, display settings, and increase the resolution of the display output.
If that doesn't work, you may actually have deleted the driver for the monitor. In which case, you should be able to reinstall it, altohugh if it is a relatively new computer it should be plug-and-play, but then you wouldn't be having this problem. You can try going to "add hardware" in the control panel. You can have it automatically detect new hardware, which might work. If not, you can select the right monitor from the list. You might need your Windows cd though.
Sorry if that isn't helpful, but this sounds like something that can be fixed with enough playing around. Which, as it turns out, is hard to describe how to do.

Thanks, this is actually exactly the kind of help I need. It's not the settings and it's not in safe mode (I actually do know *just* that much). I am going to look for the monitor drivers. I have all my windows cds.
I didn't want to reinstall stuff willy-nilly, esp. since my backup didn't take yesterday.

Does Windows have the equivalent of what on Macs is called Universal Access? On a Mac this allows you to make the text motherjumpin huge with the click of a few keys. I assume by now Windows had copied this function since it's been on Macs since the 80s. Control panel setting I'm sure.

Actually, that is a good point. Control panel under accessibility options. Click the display tab and unclick "high contrast" if it is selected (assuming you are using XP).

No, it wasn't anything like that -- I had deleted the monitor driver. I went to HP and downloaded the driver. As soon as I saw the name I remembered that I had tossed it, notwithstanding the warning "Deleting this may cause some programs not to work properly. Are you sure you want to proceed?"
Thanks for the tip, Adder.

why do kids buy PCs still for college. I get that the whole business world is still locked in so our firmhas to, but I was at a coffee shop on a major campus and most of these dweebs were toting PCs. The only downside to a Macbook is that Ty's avatar runs overly fast, oh, and I always forget how to paste.
