If you're not that picky (and/or have a stand-alone freezer set to 0 degrees F), by all means save the money and go for the $50 buck device.

If you do care about texture, don't have a basement freezer, or might want to make multiple batches in succession (I sometimes do*), spend 5 times as much to get this . It's what I would get were I currently in the market. I'm still using the Williams-Sonoma machine I got as a wedding gift 10 years ago--back then there were fewer choices, and it was $400.

I must admit that I also own the big Hamilton Beach salt-and-ice $20 machine. You can't beat it if you're making ice cream for a large crowd, and it's really not that much of a pain to do the salt and ice. Just be sure to make the ice cream the day before so it can cure in your freezer overnight (and make the mix the day before that so it can properly chill before you put it in the freezer--my favorite ice cream recipe requires thickening on the stove).

*One time for a Middle-Eastern-themed book group meeting, I made three ice creams: pistachio, cardamom, and rose. Yummy.
I'll take your word for it. I was just trying to be hepful. When I want ice cream, I go to the store. When it comes to DIY foodstuffs, I'm much more of a savory than a sweet guy.

Yet another reason I gave up on these years ago. We had one of the cylinder-chill versions. First time--never got cold enough. Next time, put all the ingredients in the refrigerator (or even freezer) in advance to get the temperature as low as possible. That worked okay. Tried it again. Left it in freezer too long, and the ingredients were a block of ice.

In the time it took, I could have gone to Baskin Robbins. Twice.

Now, I'd be happy to wait it out if I were chillin' with BnB while she fixed some ice cream for me.

last meal?

a Ronnie's that's My Delight! from Bread Basket Deli in Oak Park mi.

the Ronnie's slices a latke in half (a thick one) and use it as bread for an over stuffed corned beef sandwich- served with apple sauce and sour cream. They really aren't good for you- but last meal of course okay- plus if it clogs the arteries a bit that would only slow down the poison circulation speed you know?

1. Nova Lox, tomato, onion, cucmber, capers, and a squeeze of fresh pepper on a pumpernickel bagel, with tons of fresh craked black pepper.

2. Maguro sushi.

3. Malpeque or Totten Island oysters on the half shell with mingonette and black pepper.

4. My red beans and rice.

5. half of a 1.5 inch thick ribeye, liberally seasoned with salt and pepper, grilled to a nice crust on the outside, still slightly cold in the center.

I am such a copycat (of you, pretty lady), but will elaborate so as to make it a little less obvious that I slavishly imitate you:

1. Cheese pizza slice with crispy crust and mushrooms
2. sesame bagel, cream cheese, peppered nova, tomato and sweet onion
3. tuna avocado roll with sesame seeds on the outside
4. crispy belgian waffle with butter and a side of seasoned egg whites
5. that veal dish where a cutlet is breaded, fried and placed on arugula and tomato (there's a name for this, but I just can't think of it right now)

And don't even get me started on dessert -- but let me just say these three words: hot fudge sundae

ETA -- maybe the veal thing is veal milanese. I think that's it. YUM!
