I don't think so. It's possible that he was trying to shock me by talking about anal sex, but he knows me well enough to know that I'm not going to get the vapors when he talks about ass play.

Then that is really disturbing. It has caused a frown to crease my brow.

It will make you glad you never had to go through the New York City shelter system, which might brighten your day. But the people she follows through their rounds are living and complicated and engaging, so you're not constantly thinking about How Much American Capitalism Sucks while you read it. It's not polemic, or a screed. Or a jeremiad.*
And you are a large and lazy breed. Just remember where all the bombs are and you'll be alright.
*So rarely the chance to use in a sentence fragment. Sorry.

You do realize, don't you, that if you do make a love connection with a death row guy, his prior relationship will likely have included anal rape?

I was disturbed too. And very glad that I've never had sex with him.

I would have gone with "Taxwonk is retarded," but since you're the designated torch-grabber and all it's your call.

You won't be disappointed. Imagine -- a book that can even make a badass like Ironweed a little verklempt.
I'm not done with it yet (not for lack of trying -- if I had had a solid block of uninterrupted time, I could've finished it this weekend), and it is about people in poverty -- but I don't see it as a despairing or unrelentingly depressing book.
And Ironweed, apparently Boy George (whom the author first met at his trial) spoke openly to her on the condition that she would tell no one anything if he were acquitted, or that he would kill her.
I've been reading various interviews with her on the internet today.

You do realize, don't you, that I am on a quest for MFM? So that's actually kind of hot, except for the raping part. Maybe it was more friendly.
Anyway, I am being pro-condom so I don't see why that would not go along with what I was saying.
