Yeah, I started on prog rock too. The only thing I'd add is Renaissance.

ETA, particularly relevant

Are Floyd, Waters, and Rush really prog rock? Floyd seems sui generis. And Rush always struck me as standard hard rock/early math rock.

I loved Roxy Music. If moved me past the Stones, and was my fave band. And no one in my middle or high school had heard of them- although one friend asked to borrow my Country Life album overnight one Saturday (Google the cover). Then Love is the Drug hit, and it became “oh yes Roxy Music, Love is the Drug!”

Nooooooo!

My school's claim was that a couple of people got together at the school who would later form New Riders of the Purple Sage.

It was pretty on-brand for us, overall.

As I was driving around this weekend, thinking about LessinThe70s sitting cross-legged next to his turntable surrounded by Genesis records, our local alternative rock station played ELO’s “Don’t Bring Me Down.” Later this weekend, as I was driving around flipping through the stations, thinking about LessinThe70s playing air flute to a rad Jethro tune, I landed on our classic rock station, which was playing ELO’s “Don’t Bring Me Down.” I took it as a sign. I’m not sure if ELO is technically prog rock, but it is hard to deny the visceral power of the riff in this tune. And when I saw the video (which I don’t think I have ever seen before), it sealed the deal. It is perfect. If I were to try to make a video that encapsulated the 70s, including a neon hot dog pulsating to the hand clap section, this video would be it. You may think ELO is totes uncool … but try not to clap along, I dare you:

Fun fact: Jeff Lynne says that mystery word he says after “Don’t Bring Me Down” is “groos” — a made-up placeholder word that he ended up keeping in the final version of the song. Later, after so many fans interpreted the mystery word as actually being the name “Bruce,” he started singing “Bruce” instead of “groos” in concert. An ELO engineer has a different story, so we may never know the truth.

Sebby, I'm wondering if Russia's invasion of Ukraine has prompted you to re-evaluate your thinking on the nexus between Trump and Russia. IIRC, you were skeptical of a lot of the media's reporting -- more, as I understood it, out of a sort of contrarian streak inclined to debunk what most people were thinking. But Trump's posture towards Putin and Russian looks much worse now than it did a few weeks ago, which is saying something.

Song of the Day

The traditional Mardi Gras song Iko has had so many version over the years, it is hard to choose just one. So I didn’t. This version is cool just to see Dr. John working his magic on the 88s up close:

Cha Wa is a band literally descended from traditional “Indian” gangs of old, and this version really evokes some more traditional versions with some great funky guitars:

This one is, well, just watch the video. Amazing:

And finally, my favorite is probably the spare version of the Dixie Cups. You don’t need much to make a great song. Some sticks, a drum, and your voices:

Conf to PLF:

I couldn't figure out why this post bothered me so much. I just now finally realized why. It's your two-facedness. You start by complementing Mr. Lynne, "it is perfect." That was nice, and showed a good side of you, especially when you also dismiss people that think they are above his music.

Then, but a paragraph later, you imply that his word can't always be trusted?

It makes me wonder how much I should trust you when you compliment me or any of the other posters.

Trump and Russia, for those who want to see so much of it in one place.

Quit saying I don’t.

Speaking of Japan, it’s Weird Wednesday on the SOTD. Do you understand the major role that Haruomi Hosono has played on Japanese popular music? Me neither, but it is major. From what I have read. I definitely dig the groove of this little weird number:

Melt Banana says they were influenced by Hosono? Because otherwise, FOH
