EW doesn't have the link on their site yet, so I am assuming IMdB published a press release, with no detail.

Perhaps "cult" means did crappy at the box office and kicked ass on home video/ dvd. Once they release the issue, I'll fill in the gaps.

'Spinal Tap' Tops Cult Movie List

Seminal rock'n'roll documentary spoof This Is Spinal Tap has topped a new poll of cult movie hits. The 1984 Rob Reiner movie about an ill-fated rock group, starring Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean, beat The Rocky Horror Picture Show and 1932's Freaks to claim top spot in the Top 50 Cult Movies list in influential American magazine Entertainment Weekly. Notable omissions include A Clockwork Orange, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Life Of Brian, Straw Dogs and Reservoir Dogs.

The top ten is: 1. This Is Spinal Tap (1984); 2. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975); 3. Freaks (1932); 4. Harold & Maude (1971); 5. Pink Flamingos (1972); 6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974); 7. Repo Man (1984); 8. Scarface (1983); 9. Blade Runner (1982); 10. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

What's a cult movie?

I would not put Scarface and Shawshank in the cult category, I think of them as mainstream movies.

I nominate Office Space, Raising Arizona, and Dr. Strangelove to the list.

Etiquette Rules Pole

Here's a law-related etiquette question - when plagiarizing counsel for co-respondent's pleading isn't it proper to call counsel for co-respondent and ask permission first?

This has happened to me three times: the first time, the person called and asked and of course, I said ok. Second time, I was not asked in advance but received an unsolicited, "um I hope that was okay" the first time that I ran into em.

Today, I receive a pleading from someone I had never previously spoken with that began "caption . . my entire pleading word for word (even forgot to switch out em's client's name for mine in a few places) ... signature." I called em - not to complain but to alert em to the pretrial conference as em's pleading was filed three weeks after the return date so em was not listed in the order. I began with, "you may not know that a pretrial conference has been scheduled" and was cut off with an abrupt, "I'm sure that the court will send notice. I'll get back to you later." end of call, so that I did not get to finish the sentence which would have been, "at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning and each attorney has been ordered to bring a detailed trial memo outlining the entire case..."

Tomorrow should be interesting. I wonder if the Judge will send the sheriff after em.

I always considered cult movies those kind of films that achieved some level of popularity falling far short of blockbusters or mainstream movies that have a rabid following from a certain smaller segment of the population, who can usually damn near quote the movie verbatim. That's usually a pretty good measuring stick, no?

If you can't quote more than one or two lines from a movie, it ain't a cult movie.

Absolutely agree. It's one of those movies that you make your friends watch so you can talk about how disturbing it is, because you certainly can't describe it otherwise.

Now that you mention it, I am not sure of that at all. Let's just say that my sisters and I heard the phrase "Enterfuckintain Us!" yelled at us by entire frats on more than one occasion.

From what I recall, Scarface did pretty poorly at the box office. And have you seen "Cribs?" Virtually every single rapper on the show has a huge Scarface poster in his crib (usually hanging over the pool table). In fact, I don't think you're a bona fide MC w/out one...

if you like Harold and Maude, you will probably like Pumpkin with Christina Ricci. the same "love that society objects to as very wrong" storyline, but no implied sex with Ruth Gordon.

Good point, although I will note that I have no problem with the post in which you asked this question.

I think of films like Eraserhead, Aki Kurusmaki (sp?) and Jim Jarmusch films etc. as cult films. But maybe they are just "indie-like films with a small group of die-hard fans". I once saw "Clerks" described as a cult movie. I don't think it is a cult movie - it's got too many die-hard fans - not small enough to be cult-like. But maybe the powers that be think of big cults when they make up these terms.

WTF

From the WTF file:

ATHENS, Greece - A 30-year-old man forced his eyes out their sockets to protest his arrest at Athens International Airport, authorities said Tuesday.

Remi Tsolakis was taken to a hospital and received surgery to try and restore his eyesight, doctors said.

Tsolakis was arrested late Monday after flying to Athens from the island of Rhodes. Airport authorities discovered he had an outstanding three-month jail sentence for a minor offence.

He told police he did not have enough money to pay a fine in lieu of the sentence and would have to go to jail.

Police gave no details of the offense.

From FuFu: and this seemed s good idea because...?

If you like Pumpkin or Harold and Maude, you will probably like fetish porn. A lot of it is the same "love that society objects to as very wrong" storyline, but with more hardcore sex and less talking about things.

I think it's cute that the girls at the Chicken Ranch call themselves a "sorority."
