yes I was being a smart ass- but yes there is a difference. I lived for 5 years in No. Va. near "Little Saigon". South Vietnamese style- they mix the ingrediants for you. North they come separate and you mix them. In the restaurant I learned this North cost more- explain that shit wonk

It's the middle of the damned summer, I prefer colder food. If I lived somewhere cold, somewhere on the list would be beef daube and other stews.

In Praise of Sweet Corn

For most of the year, I can take or leave corn. I like it fine, but don't get too excited about opening a can or a bag of Green Giant.

But for a few short weeks during the summer, I could eat corn on the cob every single day. There is a farmer down Bilmore's way who has produce stands in strategic parts of the metro area, fortunately quite close to the Manor, who sells really good sweet corn to us city folks.

There is nothing like corn that has been off the stalk for less than 12 hours. The less time between picking and eating, the better. Back in my country girl days, the Fugee Mom would get the water boiling while the sibs and I went out to the garden to pick supper. But without my own vegetable garden** I have to settle for corn picked earlier in the day.

If I get sick of eating it boiled with a little butter and salt, I'll get fancy and try it grilled or with seasoned butters.

**I might consider this for next year. My back yard is big, boring and treeless. A nice stand of sweet corn would be like a privacy fence from my next door neighbor.

Starbucks: you have to carry your overpriced, overburnt joe over to the dirty sugar bar and add your own milk and sugar, at your own risk of spilling and splattering. NY deli: tell 'em how you want it and they do it for you, plus they give you anything else you order in a bag that you can actually carry. And, no tip jar. Explain that shit hank.

Does Dunkin' Donuts presumptively put cream and sugar in your coffee at all of its locations, or is that a Massachusetts thing?

I think it's a dying practice. The one near me is a Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins/some sandwich joint combo, and there is a vile sugar/cream/trash bar.

Sigh. So any combos/choices, so little quality/service.

I think Marx predicted that capitalism would unleash this sort of race to the bottom. The lack of quality coffee and service eventually will prompt the proletariat to revolt and usher in a worker's paradise, or so the theory goes. I'm pretty sure that he says that Dunkin' Donuts will be the first ones up against the wall when the revolution comes.

what I don't feature is how starbucks makes money. a dozen people buy 1 cup of coffee at $2.50 then sit at a table for an hour. a restaurant has to make way more than that a square foot doesn't it/ i mean I know they are making money- but I don't get how.
