Curb Mommy
http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,...0.html?eol.tkr
[Cheryl David actress is a new mom.]
Did we ever reach a board consensus on how old she is? She actually looks a lot like one of my best friends from high school. Unfortunately for my friend (who is actually quite cute, but has a kind of big mouth proportionally for her face), her two biggest celebrity resemblences are this Curb actress (though, as noted, she has looked better recently) and Christine Baranski.
ETA: the E! website says she was born in 1965 (not that actors are always honest about that sort of thing).

They do. My sister-in-law (that would be Mrs. Not Nick for those keeping score at home) teaches 3rd grade in a public school, and there are lots of funky names out there (and not just the stereotypical Shaniquas). She's very careful about taking the time to get the names right -- and she teaches in a school district with black kids, WASP kids (mostly alternative spellings like "Britney" and "Kaytlin"), Vietnamese kids, South Asian kids, even Bosnian refugee kids.

I'm not at all surprised that you lack skill and accuracy at your chosen profession, jacking off.

80's making a comeback

Didn't we beat to death the pros and cons of the 80s revival over a year ago. In fact, I think it was during this original debate that it first came out that I despise Simon TheGood and his femme-y little band of synth-bots. This is just inexcusable.

I was bugged that Lisa L. didn't make it, too. I can't really explain to you why big black women get a pass, other than to say the music business isn't exactly progressive, and there's more historical precedent for bigger black women being accepted in pop music than bigger white women.
Look at all the flack Ann Wilson from Heart took when she ballooned up. Same with Stevie Nicks. On the other hand, no one said boo about Aretha Franklin being large as a barge, because the focus was on her talent. A lot of the blues, soul and gospel singers were big women. I guess it's just more accepted by the audience historically, and as these women crossed over from soul, gospel and blues into "pop" music, it was already a given that you would see a larger black woman performing. So, the answer is, it just is. It's not necessarily right, it just is.

bertuzzi
I'm no hockey expert, but I'd like to know what people thought about Bertuzzi's hit last night. I thought it was a cheaper shot than when Brashear got whacked with a stick. I mean, he blind-side punched the guy (which is a cheap shot in and of itself) and then purposely put all of his weight on the guy's head and back, smashing his face into the ice and breaking his neck. Unbelievable.
This guy should be kicked out of the league. That can't be part of the game. The cops at the venue should have entered the ice and placed him in cuffs right then and there.

My sister teaches kindergarten in a school that is 90% noncaucasion. She is more concerned with keeping the kids from peeing on her and wiping their boogers on her than she is about pronouncing their names correctly. But this would probably be the case no matter the racial make up of her class.

I share a surname with a US President. I'm always amazed at how many people ask me to spell it for them. Idiots. (No, it's not one of the trickier ones like Roosevelt.)
There was a bit on boston.com about names. According to the article Philip and Thomas were girls names in the 14th century.

Counterpoint: I've been in enough sports throughout life to know that you can do incredibly stupid things in the heat of the game. I've hit people harder and cheaper than that, and I've been hit harder and cheaper than that. It was a retaliation for a past same-type offense that gave one of his teammates a concussion, so there's history there, too.
Yeah, it was stupid. Yeah, it was excessive. Yeah, he's an asshole. But, yeah, to a certain extent, it happens.

Where do you draw the line between actions that are part of the game, although punishable by the league, and criminal acts. Plenty of what happens during sporting events would be far from legal on the street (boxing, fights in hockey, trench warfare in football).
I'm all for a lengthy suspension, particularly in this case, but worry about overzealous prosecutors reaching out after out-of-town athletes. (Think Zim would be free from prosecution in Boston?) Since it happened on the ice without any unapproved equipment (say a shiv, pulled out TO style), I'd say leave it to the league.
