Well, I think that Average Joe is mocking or deriding the whole style over substance culture in which we live rather than the Tribe. But it may just be that I'm a Member and can't see myself being mocked or derided.
That being said, I invented parantheticals, but stopped using them after they reached their sell by date. SD must not have gotten the memo.

Trading Spaces
Concur that the show jumped the shark with the introduction of Kia. The $100K episode was just tedious. I'm off the TS bandwagon. It was fun while it lasted.
My new reality show kick is "MythBusters." It's like "Jackass" for nerds, with a touch of "Monster Garage" thrown in for good measure. It gives me the information I need to know, like "Does my tongue piercing make me more likely to be struck by lightning?" and "What happens when you weld a JATO to a '66 Impala?" and "Will I electrocute myself if I pee on the third rail?"
I think I will quit my job and make human beings out of ballistics jelly, then blow them up.

1. Yeh, I know, but your discussion of Jews is thoroughly dull.
2. No, its not mocking the MOT. So there are some ugly Jews on a reality show. Whatever. The MOT have a lot of catching up to do... there have been multiples more butt ass ugly Christians on game shows for the last 50 years.
And, contrary to what your argument implies, there is no stereotypical looking or acting Jew anymore. I know a whole lotta Jews, and there's a wide disparity of appearance and bahavior. This argument is dumb.

Indeed. Almost as ironic as.. oh, I don't know... ray-yee-yayn -- oh that joke's so old I can't even finish it...
But true what you say. In Orthodox circles, if your father's a MOT and your mother isn't, and you observe every last mitzvah, down to the dietary laws and Shabbat observance, put a mezzuzah on every last door frame in your home, you're still not a Jew (nor do you have a "right of return" or whatever it's called to Israel under Israeli law), unless you convert (and are converted by an Orthodox rabbi).
Of course, that's just the Orthodox circle. Mileage varies.

This has always seemed counterproductive to me since there's so much intermarriage it makes more sense from a survival perspective to include dads' heritage and make the tribe more, not less, inclusive. But this is balanced by my feeling that since pretty much every other major religion tells women to shut up and breed and it's otherwise the men that matter, it's nice that there's one religion that gives women some credit.

This is kind of one of those dammed if you do, dammed if you don't things. If you do assume, you are stereotyping. But if you don't assume that Mr. Cohen from [name of primarily Jewish area] is Jewish, and wonder e.g. where he's going for Christmas, you are ignorant and/or insensitive.
What fun.
Edited to note that I am looking forward to being bashed for thinking it's OK to ask of anyone where they are going for Christmas. In areas where there are not many Jews, it's a common question. People make assumptions -- like, I generally assume people can see so if I'm talking on the phone to someone I've never met, I will recommend an art exhibit and I don't find that insensitive since the vast majority of people are sighted.

Let's add another layer of irony. Modern Jews overlook this. So did (to our best evidence) the entire Jewish community before the suppression of the Bar-Kochba revolt of 135 C.E. The exact moment in history when the Jewish religion was most in danger of being stamped out, they banned conversions and introduced a membership requirement that effectively capped their numbers.
I think there's a movement within Judaism to re-recognize patrilineal descent, and to ease the conversion process, because of declining population and the American intermarriage problem. Which would be nice, because it sucks to have your parents disown you because you're marrying a Catholic girl who gives good head.

My best friend was born and raised in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. Broken Bow is part of the ArklaTex, extreme SE OK. There are no synagouges within a few miles, I'm fairly sure. He grew up Baptist or Presbyterian or one of the ones where you don't need to snake handle.
While in law school he did some geneology research and discovered that about going back about to 1850, there is a chain of his father's maternal grandmothers that lead to a Jewish women. That is, all of a sudden his dad becomes the only Jew he knows in his home town.
His dad didn't switch religions, and couldn't have gotten a minion together anyway. Also, he didn't publicize his Jewishness, even though the Klan was not very visable there any more. But it was a shocker to him.
Of course its not like being part indian where you get a share of Casino $$$ if you can prove it. Proving you're 1/16 Jewish does not give you partial control over movie making decisions.
