You can also click on someone's profile and hit "add to ignore list".
I generally use it for the politics board.

The more "you" post, the more obvious your sockishness becomes. The ultimate sock gambit is "I'm not a sock, I am a long-time lurker."
Let it go.

I have found that the ignore list has the opposite effect than intended ... the very fact that I can't see the post makes me want to read it, even though I know the post is likely to cause whatever reaction (boredom, irritation, a desire to post a response despite my better judgment) that I was trying to avoid by putting the poster on the list.
|
Does that mean you're my friend? My very own rolly-polly-robustpuppy-friend? weeeeeeeeeeee :bounce:
I agree on the effect of ignore features -- it kills me not to know what someone wrote. I haven't seen anything here that would cause someone to be ignored (skip the post if you don't wanna read it). On the old board I would have used it in the politics forum but only because some of those people were annoying, repetitive, ignorant fucks. Oh, okay, so are some people here but I mean that in a nice way when referring to people here. I would be simply crushed if someone like TM cared enough to go through the process of putting me on an ignore list -- then this board would be like my fleshy family and thus no longer add joy to my life.

The Displaced Dog spent a week of his late puppyhood in jail for nipping at a garbage man who had opened his gate and come into his yard. Ten days in the hoosegow, trading puppuroni in order to ensure that he wasn't made some pit bull's bitch. They let us have conjugal visits.
Anyhow, when I bought my house last year, the first insurance company that I called asked me if the Displaced Dog had ever bitten anyone, and I disclosed the several year old incident (including the paperwork that found the whole thing to have been provoked by the garbage man). I was told that there was no way that I could be absolutely sure that he wouldn't bite another person on the property. I had to hunt for another homeowners policy. My current insurer did not ask, and I did not tell.

It's good that we're not notified if we're put on one's list. I would be crushed, too. I'm very fragile. Posting here is a skin-thickening exercise that I've adopted in preparation for switching to a litigation practice.

I use the ignore feature with posters whose comments infuriate me.
I read every single post on this board -- the ignore feature enables me to avoid rereading posts I find particularly offensive.
Edited to add: the posters on my ignore list post infrequently, so y'all are not among them.

Your insurer asked if you had pets? Mine never did -- if I had been asked, I would have had to disclose my gaggle of ferocious kitty-cats and one less than fierce pussy-dog. Even more shocking to me was their utter lack of concern over the pool -- I always thought a pool made your insurance sky-rocket. Live and learn. Of course, the only real possible risk is my getting drunk and drowning in the jacuzzi (or having the tv fall in while I bubble and watch the Cup finals) so maybe the insurance company wasn't concerned about paying out such a minor loss.

I didn't mean to suggest that comedy = dreck. I'm not saying he should make more serious movies, I'm saying he should make better funny ones. But -- at the risk of being called out for reviewing a movie I haven't actually seen -- I've heard that in Bruce Almighty, his character is a jerk whom we're supposed to like simply because he's played by Carrey. This sounds a little too familiar.
Am happy to be contradicted by anyone who's actually seen his recent stuff.

Oh no. Our first spat. A disagreement over Schoeny. Oh my. :argue:
You do not like he who was the first defenseman drafted in 1972? You dislike the man of whom it is said "Few Sabre fans will ever forget the 1972 December evening when Schoeny took Bruins' Wayne Cashman "outside," and, for good measure, man-handled two other big, bad Bruins in the same contest." I am heartbroken that you do not respect the man who, along with Tim Horton, helped the Sabres in 1972-73 to attain the third-best single-season improvement in modern National Hockey League history and, in only their third season, achieve "a playoff berth in a rugged Eastern Division stocked with established NHL powerhouses."

Oh, and no, you cannot see who has you on an ignore list (if anyone.) I suppose I could, but I would have to go searching through code, and well, not gonna happen.

No argument here. That's exactly who his character is. And you're right, it's true to form. I was just comparing that to when he tries to break away from such characters. When he tries to be anyone else, it's always more disappointing than when he sticks with what has worked. I guess his problem is that he needs good material.
But isn't that everyone's problem?

Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, and Adam Sandler all based their careers on this gambit. Two of them are considered great actors.

No silly, I like him. Don't you remember the infamous Schoenfeld-Don Koharski dispute during the 1988 (I think) playoffs? When Schoenfeld yelled that at Koharski? (Also part of a Wayne's World inside joke - i.e. Officer Koharski who loved crullers.)
