Or do more Dems takes web polls? All of the web news sites generate web polls that are heavily skewed toward democratic ideals. Newsweek, CNN, Time, etc. Every web poll I participate in shows the results upon completion, and they always show, for example, that 70% of poll takers plan to vote for Kerry; or that 78% disapprove of the way Bush is handling terrorism. Can someone explain? This can't be b/c the majority of conservatives get their news from FoxNews.com, a sight in which I don't visit, can it?

Yes, I saw it. it did mke the opposition to Pickering look bad -- Schumer in particular came across as a smug party hack. I hereby withdraw my opposition to Pickering.

It would _really_ have been impressive if Evers had been doing the grilling.

Well Coltrane has just proven the biased media thing in a way that the Reps. could never do.
Those mags are heavily biased. Once we have a Dem president I would be interested in seeing if they are just critical, or liberally skewed.

Or responses are skewed towards people who are dissatisfied with the status quo. It's like online ratings of stores, products etc. It overrepresents complaints because how many people bother saying: "I bought this product and it does what it says."?

Taliban Leader Omar Wounded in U.S. Bombing Raid, DPA Reports
March 29 (Bloomberg) -- Mullah Mohammad Omar, the fugitive leader of the Taliban, was wounded in a U.S. bombing raid earlier this month that killed four of his bodyguards, Deutsche Presse- Agentur said, citing a newspaper report in Pakistan.

Omar was injured in the legs and left side of his body and won't be able to move about for two months, DPA said, citing an interview in the Urdu language daily newspaper, Ausaf, with Jabbar Aziz, a doctor. The report said the raid took place in the southern Afghan province of Zabul.

The newspaper, which is known for having contacts with the Taliban, didn't say where or when the interview with Aziz took place, DPA reported.

Omar, who is said to be about 41, has been on the run since the Taliban regime was ousted in the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan in December 2001. The U.S. is sending 2,000 Marines to Afghanistan to help step up the hunt for Omar and other Taliban leaders, as well as members of the al-Qaeda terrorist network still hiding in Afghanistan.

Yo, JFK, if you want to save teh environment and pay for your as-yet-unfunded health care plan, how about raising the gas tax instead? At least that way you'll give people a marginal incentive to reduce gas consumption, rather than lowering further the average cost to drive a mile. I'm embarassed, since just last week I was citing the benefits of your proposal to lower corporate taxes. Guess you didn't take economics after all.

On the one hand, I'm all for raising gas taxes because it would make those fuckers with their H2s and their mega SUVs pay. On the other hand, it's a really regressive tax that hurts people like bnb's housekeeping, lawn service and pool service people who can't afford to live in McMansionLand and have to drive b/c McMansionLands tend to lack public transportation (as does much of the US -- too fucking much space, unlike Europe).

So I find myself conflicted on this Monday.

It hurts people who drive a lot. It hurts them more if they drive fuel-inefficient cars. Cigarette taxes hurt people who smoke. Alcohol taxes hurt people who drink. And in every case, they hurt more for people less able to afford them because they're poor. (BTW, I'd be interested in a study of how much poor vs. rich drive. I'd guess that for every maid who has to drive all the way across houston, there's a rich real estate agent who does the same).

If you're really concerned about regressivity, then make it (more) income neutral, and increase by a few thousand bucks the standard deduction. Everybody pays $100 less in income taxes, and an average of $100 more in gas tax.

Besides, how much are we talking here? If you drive 15k a year (a fair amount), that's 500-750 gallons of gas, for anything but a really fuel inefficient car (tough luck to you). So even a dollar per gallon is not a huge chunk.

True, but gas more than others. I'd prefer an increase in the tax credit for fuel efficient/environmentally friendly cars.
