Becoming a BIGLAW partner requires you to spend your time doing things that do not set yourself up for a career in politics. I agree that there are more senior types with political potential, but didn't they get there on the strength of accomplishments elsewhere (e.g., Giuliani)?

Am I correct in assuming (re your pal) that whatever office he would hold if successful would not pay enough for him to live on? It's not clear to me whether he wants to be at a firm (a) while running for office (b) while in office (c) both (a) and (b) or (d) after he finishes being in office.

I would think it would be hard to make a good impression at firm while running if (a) or (c). If (b), it seems like it might be workable if the firm wants its associates in politics. I am non-familiar with BIGLAW policy on that. If (d), shit, if he has enough of a political career, he can get into BIGLAW just as a lobbyist-under-a-different-name.

Not that Dallas is a huge market, but the mayor who then went back to BigTex was at BigTex before he became mayor. Ron Kirk. I'm no Ron Kirk buff, and I didn't start the Ron Kirk fan club or even join as a member, but I believe that his career path was BigTex associate, BigTex partner, mayor of Dallas, BigTex partner. I think he stayed of counsel at that firm while he was mayor too, which resulted in some potential conflicts, but also bolstered his $30k income from the city during that period.

After his mayor stint I believe he ran for US Senate was was defeated in the primary by Kay Bailey Hutcheson. Though I may have exact details wrong here, because I didn't pay that much attention to Dallas politics.

I think he is risk-averse and trying to have his cake and eat it too. I think he's thinking (a) and (d), or if he runs and loses. I told him in pretty strong terms that the options are inconsistent, but now I'm wondering if I steered him wrong.
