Again and again, and when I ask you to explain, you say . . .

There was a time when you didn't like the Clash. So there's still hope.

Not that THS is the Clash. But I dig Craig Finn's lyrics and even his vocal style. And they do rawk.

Catch 'em live if you can, even if you're not into them. The actually appear to be having fun. Too many bands never smile. Not The Hold Steady.

Dy-no-mite!

Doris Lessing wins the Nobel Prize, joining the long line of Nobel Prize winners whose stuff I've never read. They couldn't reach her to tell her, apparently because she was out shopping in London.

I have read Doris Lessing* and I think she's brilliant. Not my favorite author by a long shot, but definitely worth reading. I particularly like "The Sun Beneath their Feet."

*maybe because I'm a chick -- I suspect she's slightly more popular among women than men.

In any event, Theresa the nun or whatever is posting about having happy orgasms, not about abstaining from sexual behavior. So her writings aren't even a counterpoint to my point. ppnyc is posting about abstaining, and how she is largely unhappy about it, except from the belief that it is somehow morally superior. But even people who think that being somewhat overweight is a moral failing (you KNOW who you are) don't want to hear at length about deprivation. Just like people who believe abstaining from sex, or deriving pleasure from sex, don't really want to hear about not having sex or having non-fun sex. They either guiltily engage in second-hand sex, or they make talking/reading/watching/hearing about sex as much of a moral failing as engaging in it.

So I think ppnyc needs to take the plunge and regard all food, even low-calorie healthy food, as a verboten, sinful subject that must be avoided.
you are projecting, I dont think I am morally superior. at all. I hate when people preach about "Oh, I'm putting half away right now!!! and eating it tomorrow!" when you sat next to them for a year and watched them snack all day and stuff their face.

This is very hard for me right now, and I'm wistful for sweets and carbs. It has nothing to do with feeling better than. It is genuine sadness I can't have large amounts of sugar and starch. There are copious amounts of sweets at my firm for diff functions, showers, retirement parties, etc. it is hard to walk away. sorry.

and besides, I'm working out a lot more. running, walking at lunch walking in morning and at night. last time i posted about how hard that was everyone said "just make it a priority and make the time, it isn't that hard" SO I did. And it is hard....but I'm making an effort.

I really don't understand why you invited TM to comment about "who is fatter" why would you do that?

I can't read her right now because she wrote in English and I seem to be on a kick of reading things in translation: Roberto Bolano, Julio Cortazar, Umberto Eco, Bolano again, Alvaro Mutis. I don't know when this is going to stop. Bolano is the shit, by the way. Unlike Eco, who wouldn't bother me if he would just stop pretending that what he is writing is fiction.

You call yourself fat so often that it's no longer fun for me. But I'm sure that was part of your evil master plan.

And I didn't call you fat this time either. I said snyc is fatter than you. But she is fatter than Coltrane as well. And that dude is skinny.

So, you see? It all works out.

Yes. I spent $10 on dinner last night. I am a rich New Yorker who spends money on the most frivolous things. Yesterday, I had an $8 salami, turkey and cheddar sandwich on a bagel for dinner. I can't be stopped. Today, I will spend $8 on a pasta lunch. I have money coming out of my ears, I say! Tomorrow I may have a $2 slice of pizza. I don't even care. Hell, I may go completely nuts and shop at Whole Foods this weekend! I am a Tycoon.

Good God. We all spend the same amount on food. Even a lowly secretary. My fave deli place went up and now is 10.75 for a bi bim bap.

Why am I doing this? I don't know but I for some reason want to help.

The key to dieting isn't cutting out anything. You can't be wistful for any particular kind of food. That's why Weight Watchers works.

I did Weight Watchers a while ago, because I still had baby weight to lose and I wanted to be where I wanted to be when I got my boobs done. I lost just shy of 30 pounds in just over 8 months and have more or less maintained that now for a couple of years.

I eat what I want. I eat a cupcake. I eat a piece of pizza. I eat waffles with dtb and donuts and quacamole.

But I don't eat like that every day and I don't overeat like that, and if I have a cupcake at lunch, I am more likely to pay more attention at dinner.

It's about balance. If you are mindful of your eating, think about what it is that is making you eat, think about whether you really want that [insert trigger food here], and really only splurge on things that will be meaningful to you, you can cut calories fairly easily. Add a 20 minute walk once a day and you're totally going to lose weight.

But better than that, you're going to develop a whole new relationship with food and your body that will really surprise you.

You have to change the way you think. Nothing else will make you lose the weight.
