Too funny!!!! LOL!!!! Who knew mint was so prolific! Well, look at the bright side - you have makings for a lot of Mojitos! Just drink responsibly, please.
Yay!

What do you drink?

I don't know anyone who drinks like that, but then a lot of my friends don't drink at all, and I often go months without having any alcohol, so maybe I am not the best judge.
|
The only reason I don't drink that much is time & energy - I tend not to have enough of either after getting home from work to sit and have a drink.
Anyhow, I'm more curious about people's "conversion" ideas. I was told by my doctor (actually, several doctors) that:
one bottle of beer = one unit
one pint of beer = two units
one measured shot (1 oz) = one unit
one mixed drink = usually at least two units, up to 4, depending on mixers, size of glass and stinginess of barkeep
small (4 oz, 1/2 cup) wine = one unit
1 normal sized glass of wine = two units
1 glass port or sherry (2 oz) = one unit
By my book, that makes 6 beers roughly the same from a "drinking" p.o.v. as one regular-sized martini (and that means in the smaller glasses rather than the more usual large 8-10 oz sizes - I haven't been in a bar with old-fashioned 4 oz martini glasses in I don't know how long). OK, I give you displacement volume for the olives, and it's one martini plus a bit.
It's more the volume & fiz that would get me - after 6 beers you can safely bet on me in a belch-a-thon.

What sort of new math makes 16 ounces double 12 ounces? Figuring the higher alcohal content of draft microbrew versus bottled mass-produced American beer?
Week nights, I'm typically 2-4 drinks; some combination of beer and wine, depending on what I'm eating. Most typically, a beer when I get home, followed by a glass of wine or two with dinner and another glass (or a beer or sometimes whiskey) after getting the kid to bed.

I don't see how the beer conversion can be right. A bottle of beer is 12 OZ., and a pint is 16 OZ.

Here's info from a website on the "unit" concept --
A 'unit' of alcohol is the amount contained in 1/2 pint (284 ml) of beer, a single glass (125 ml) of table wine, a single glass (50 ml) of fortified wine, for example sherry, or a single measure (25 ml) of spirits; it approximates to 10 ml or 8 g of absolute alcohol.
See -- http://www.medicouncilalcol.demon.co...k/hb_facts.htm -- for a pretty picture that I lack the technical ability to post here.
8 oz of beer is one unit. Equivalent to glass of wine (I would guess a 6 oz glass, but I don't do metric) and one shot of liquor.
I feel gross any day after drinking 6 beers, but it is more of the feeling of sweating alcohol out of my skin than anything else. Of course the amount of time over which you are drinking also has some effect.
n(and barkeeps in Dallas don't tend to put more than 1 to 1 1/2 shots in my Cape Cods -- mayhaps NYC barkeeps are less stingy?)cs

Well, I don't think it is cool from a "hey you are really cool" perspective, but I never really thought of it as a problem. I see people sit around and guzzle sodas all day long and while I know that it is kinda apples and oranges because soda has no alcohol in it but it is chock full of caffeine which is itself a "drug." In fact, I know that my hubby (and other soda junkies I know) have a much tougher time going without their caffeine-fix than I do without beer (some nights I just don't drink, for whatever reason, and sometimes that can last a week or so and it is not like I get the DTs). I guess the combination of my diet and good genetics keeps me thin despite the beer (and I was worried it would change after 30). Funny, hubby doesn't drink beer and he has a little "beer-gut" but I don't.

Beer. Sad but true. There is like 1g of protein in a beer. To be honest, I don't know how much protein a person needs a day so I don't know if I am getting enough or not. I am a veggie but not a good one in the sense of replacing those things I don't get because of the lack of meat. I do know that the only bad result of drinking beer (or at least what I personally consider bad) is that it saps the body of the Bs, especially B12. I was B12 anemic before I started drinking more regularly and the drink certainly doesn't help. I sometimes take B12 vitamins to counteract it.
Besides veggie-burgers, what does your OM use for protein? Doesn't peanut butter have protein in it?

Soda is not really that high in caffeine -- see the chart here -- http://www.straylight.org/dave/caffeine/beverage.html
Actually one of the things that is bad about soda (along with the caffeine for some and the sugars for some), at least from a dehydration standpoint, is the carbonation. Beer has the same problem. Obviously amplified b/c of the alcohol. See this -- http://healthlink.mcw.edu/article/993748461.html
I used to drink a lot of Diet Sprite, which lacks the caffeine and sugar concerns, but it wasn't providing hydration, so I switched to water. Also once you stop drinking it regularly, if you try to start up again it tastes like plastic...

Of beer and summer
It's not the quantity of beer that she's drinking every night that got my attention. It's the quality. Bud Ice Light? Ugh. It's been a long time since I drank beer nightly, but ever since I've been old enough to not be picky about what I drink. (Face it, when you're under 21, sometimes you just drink what's available.)
The summer brews are coming out, and I'm delighted. St. Arnold's Lawnmower Ale is the local favorite around these parts, but with the reemergence of Celis Pale Bock, I think this summer I'll be ordering that the most at the Ice House. Sierra Nevada's summerfest is pretty good, and the standard Shiner Bock will always be on the rotation, as will St. Arnold's Amber Ale.
Summer has officially hit Houston. I was in the park at 6:20 this morning, and the humidity was unbelievable. Probably was already eighty five degrees at that point. When I got home the sun was fully up and doing it's thing. We've had practically no rain in the month of May, and my water bill is going to be huge this month. I get the feeling that it's not going to be nearly as nice of a summer as last year. Every year I convince myself that it's not that bad, but this year looks like it's going to be that bad. Those of you with temperatures below 85, rejoice and be thankful.

I like you ThrashersFan, but here, you suck. If I scarfed that much alcohol I'd balloon in a week like that girl who turned into a huge rotund blueberry in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."
And while we're at it, I hate that fuckin' cross-trainer that I already work off my wine on.

I've never understood the attraction of Sierra Nevada. Is the summerfest something other than ale? The regular stuff is way to wheaty for me. I'm more of a lager drinker though (although, as noted earlier, mostly I drink light beer for caloric reasons). My favorite beer is Newcastle draught (not bottle). But nowadays I can only drink one pint before switching to something lighter. I do like Shiner.
Last weekend was sweltering in Dallas. Just about time to start frying eggs on the sidewalk.

I like the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with the green lable, but the one I'm talking about is their Summerfest, which is a lager. I think it's a white or beige lable.

Sierra Summerfest is a pilsner. Good summer beer. As to Sierra Pale, "wheaty"???? I'm guessing you mean hoppy. It ain't no wheat beer (which, in general, makes good lawnmower beer, but is otherwise chick beer (I mean wheat beer, not Sierra Nevada)).
