I think it echoes what a lot of thinking liberals feel about 43. Namely, we have nothing against Resolve. We just don't like it to be the only admirable attribute our president displays. Successful statecraft can't be built on a contempt for nuance, compromise, and persuasion, but these things are regarded by neocons as hallmarks of weakness.

What a load of unleavened crap. Bush has always been able to sound reasonable or resolute or whatever. We who want to get rid of him don't judge him on his words - we judge him on what he does. That's why he's a disaster.

Okay, sometimes we do judge him on his words - "subliminable", etc.

Either you or AG is off the talking points.

I don't really believe that this capture was scripted, though as you know it really doesn't help the optics of this that John Judis predicted something like this would happen.

Actually, the best part about this article for me was another unintentional example of the inherent shortcomings of foreign translations into the American idiom.

But Powell conspicuously did not commit the United States to selling F-16s to Pakistan, which it desperately wants in order to tilt the regional balance of power against India. And the Pakistanis fear that, if they don't produce an HVT, they won't get the planes. Equally, they fear that, if they don't deliver, either Bush or a prospective Kerry administration would turn its attention to the apparent role of Pakistan's security establishment in facilitating Khan's illicit proliferation network. One Pakistani general recently in Washington confided in a journalist, "If we don't find these guys by the election, they are going to stick this whole nuclear mess up our asshole."

I only read the portion you quoted. I trust SHP to be better informed about the remainder of the argument. Also, Dems are allowed to disagree with each other. Shocking.

ETA: Or, more plausibly, I agree 100% with SHP about judging Bush based on his actions, instead of for sounding all Resolved and shit. I do not like the man, and will not be voting for him. I only wish we could find a liberal who would be as Resolved for my causes as Bush is for yours.

Give up on flipping club already?

As to the editorial, the comparison of the "war on terror" (actually the war on extremist Islam) to the "war on fascism" would only make sense if after Pearl Harbor we had invaded Spain.

Who knew Ali G. was a high-ranking Pakistani officer?

It's a finely tuned Mutt-and-Geoff routine. You oughta see them work a mediator. Or when Atticus plays SHP's wingman, fuhgeddaboutit.

No, we're saying the same thing. We're just saying it in different ways. Slavish, mindless chanting of talking points is a Republican trait. We liberals are more the creative, artsy types.

This explanation doesn't work for Kerry either.

I don't think there's anything to flip. I'm with your side on more issues than you give me credit for. The others are pretty non-negotiable.

I was reacting to the article, not to Clubby. But I can see how I might have wrecked the flip. My bad.

I'm watching the speech right now. Is it just me, or is that cadence designed specifically to give a headache? I'm trying to stick it out to the end, but this is brutal. He's a good story, but he could use an injection of charisma along with the botox.

Bush may be the only candidate in the last few decades to get a "bounce" from the other Party's convention.

Kerry's speedy delivery, combined with his cold presence didn't win anyone over on initial view.

All these Vietnam-era references must absolutely choke all those Vets that remember him from his "baby-killer" testimony. Just wait until all those Swift-Boat vets stand up and bad mouth him.

Once the pundits dissect the text - cliche after cliche, when not uber-pandering to the base - he's gonna fall like a rock.

Start chanting now - "Hill is great in Zero-Eight"

I am so glad I missed this one today.
