While we're talking paint, I also want to sing the praises of Ralph Lauren's Barn Owl White (living room), which kicks Navajo "every-newly-built-tract-townhome-in-America" White's ASS (but don't use Ralph's paint, only his colors), and Benjamin Moore's Pottery Red (hallway - there will have to be some up against the wall action there soon), Beach Glass (home office), and Wethersfield Moss (entryway, someday).

That is so hot.

Re: white/black kitchen paint, one thing I can say for sure is that, if you paint the walls a mid/deep blue, something with high color saturation, the white tile of your cabinets will look sparkling clean no matter how much crap is on them. I have a friend who painted their (really disgusting old run down white tiled NYC should be a condemned tenement) bathroom some slightly purplish mid blue, and it was the cleanest looking bathroom I've ever seen.

Bright yellows will make your kitchen sunny as hell, no matter how icky the weather, but may look odd with cool, light pickled wood cabinets. Also, if there is enough black there, you may think "bumble bee" every time you go in.

Terra cottas may be too earthy with what sounds like a non-earthy set of built-ins.

I would lean towards mid-strong blues, greens or reds. A nice strong leaf green could be lovely (and I've always thought a nice green kitchen would encourage me to eat vegetables). And deep reds don't need to be primary-ish - think cranberry, which would have cool undertones to coordinate with the cabinets (and also encourage that "clean by color design" effect I mentioned above) or even burgundy or brick.

RT: "Buffy: the Vampire Slayer" would be the way to go if "the Vampire Slayer" is descriptive ("Cimmaron: Stallion of the Crappy Disney Movies"). But I think it may be more like a title ("Pepin the Short" "Alfred the Great" "George the Dragon Killer") even if only meant to informally or sarcastically highlight the difference from other Buffies ("Pitt the Younger").

But that is b/c I am so passionate and romantic.
Most of my house is white, but I have splashes of color in my dining room and kitchen (bright blue and bright yellow, respectively). The den/study/spare bedroom is mustardy golden yellow, with a touch of green. I think it's warm and cozy, and it totally changed the room when I painted it a few months ago.

The bedroom will be the next to be painted, and I think I'll end up going with a red of some sort. The living room will stay white, but whenever I get around to redoing the disco fireplace, I'll do it in multicolored 1x1 tiles.

Navajo White -- all the way. (Actually, I can't remember which of the whites is navajo white, but I know we have it somewhere...)

The red we have is Benjamin Moore paint, but it's copied off a Ralph Lauren color (RL paint isn't all that high-quality). I forget the name of it though. I'm helpful that way.

Good point. Paint quality is extremely, extremely important. Buy the most expensive paint. Benjamin Moore makes multiple qualities of each color; go to their website and make sure that you understand everything. It is worth it. It will look much better and go on much better.

Also, painting is the only kind of work short of absurdly major stuff that I have professionals do. Those guys do it all day, every day, and it's worth it to spend the extra money on high-quality paint and have a professional put it on unless you have done a lot of painting.

Hey NYC'ers

Seeking holiday season NYC advice; see post on the lawyers with kids board.

Please pm me with any suggestions. Also, if anybody in TCOTU wants to grab a mid-December cocktail, I'll make plans to ditch the family at some point.

A word of caution about bright yellow. I sadly have florescent lighting in my kitchen, and the yellow doesn't look good at all under that lighting. I just bought a low-voltage monorail system to replace the florescent (anyone looking into these? the one I bought was a WAC kit, and it was reasonably priced and hopefully will work well in my kitchen), so hopefully the yellow won't be as harsh at night.

Could be true. I just put a pause between Buffy and The Vamprie Slayer when I say it aloud, and a comma seemed ineffective.

There's not a ton of wall space -- cabinets and the refrigerator cover much of the walls, and there's a passthrough/bar over the sink area. The only appliances I would really have on the counter are a matte grey metallic mixer and maybe a black coffeemaker.
We recently painted our kitchen in super-white trim and ceiling, and an oceanic green. I wasn't sure how the green would come out, but it's actually pleasant and gives the room warmth.

Our bedroom looks like that too: we used the Behr color "winter veil", which is a lagoon-like* really light blue-ish green. Trim is glossy white. Very calm and soothing.

*think of Venice, with it's bright, almost carribean blue-green.

Bad painting is so easy to spot, and it's such a waste, especially with expensive paint.

I have three classifications of jobs: jobs I think that I can do right now just about as well as people that do them every day. Jobs like taxi driver, IT consultant and newspaper salesman. Then there are jobs I could never do well no matter how much training I had, like surgeon, politician or schoolteacher. Painting falls into the third category: jobs that I could do just as well as the pros, if I had all the practice. Painting might be easy, but doing it well is a lot harder than you think.

Painting is easy. Sanding, prepping, taping, and cleaning up is a pain in the ass, as is waiting in line at the hardware store or Home Depot to buy all the fucking supplies.

I have painted my own rooms, and hired a pro, and I will never do my own painting again. I have more money than time. I would rather fuck, workout, take the dogs to the park, fuck, learn how to play golf, give and/or receive oral sex, iron clothes, shop for furniture or clothes or groceries, masturbate, clean the house, download songs from itunes, post here, or bill, for chrissakes, than prep for or clean up after painting.

I also like that the painter nearly perfected very flawed walls and trim and made nearly perfectly straight ceiling lines when I don't even have straight walls.

What makes you think she wants to stimulate her appetite?
Maybe the kitchen will be the sex area - you know in front of the fridge with honey poured all over her a la 8 weeks? Was that the movie?
Or, if you're doing the Atkins or South Beach or whatever the diet of the week is now - maybe a vomit green would be better to somewhat de-stimulate the appetite.
