Re: Objectively intelligent.
It's fascinating to hear the reactions of friends and family and randoms one bumps into running necessary errands. They seem to be:
1. Investor Class
Fuck! Keep the markets open. We need liquidity. This isn't so bad. Everyone is overreacting. This is unfair. Things must go back to normal. I need yield. Who will think of the shareholders???
2. Workers Laid Off
Oh, well, month or two on unemployment. I guess govt will send me a check. They'll bar foreclosures and evictions. Crappy vacation.
3. Workers Working from Home
Okay. It's an adjustment. See the kids more. No commute. Kinda nice.
It's 3:00. Drinks?
4. Self-Employed/Indep Contractors
Fuck. I'm cooked.
5. Small Business Owners Selling Essential Services and Goods
Fuck. This blows. Do I have cash to sustain for a few months? I'll lay off everybody, run down the reserves and then feast on pent up demand when this ends.
6. Small Businesses Selling Non-Essential Services and Goods
Humming "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."
7. Gig Workers
That $1000 check is going to have to go a long fuckin' way for me.
- - -
1 and 6 are facing life altering situations. I feel bad for the older people who just lost their retirements' values for the next three years at least. Cruel pain there. I feel nothing for the affluent shareholders who are freaking because the status quo retention system devised to protect them has now been busted. I'd say to them, "You could see a recession coming a long way before this hit, and you could also see this coming if you paid attention to foreign news... Should have gone to cash. But ya didn't."

Re: Objectively intelligent.
Everyone ok? Anyone need anything?
A week in the house hasn't driven me crazy yet, but I'm crazy busy so not focusing on everything else. Healthcare lawyers in academic medical centers are actually kinda important right now.
My husband is a yoga teacher, and his studio is offering online classes. He taught this one yesterday, and if anyone needs it have at it. It's a slow, chill class that doesn't require you to know much about yoga. He's teaching some more next week and I'll post them as they come out.
Ty, you (and your wife) might find this article by Atul Gawande in the New Yorker about protecting health care workers interesting.
Stay safe, check in. Let us know what sort of support you need from us. We've been doing this for 20 years now, which is insane. We were there for each other during 9/11, and we're here for each other now. We might fight and ramble and bicker, but ultimately, we've got this weird bond that keeps us together. And that will help going forward.

Too soon, i know, but today's new cases in Michigan were less than yesterday's. Our governor did act pretty quickly to close bars/restaurants and schools.

Doc I know just asked me to review his will.
I was like, "That's morbid."
He laughed. Just being pragmatic.
Our governor has done a lot of boneheaded stuff in his tenure, but his harsh but necessary handling of this crisis has been great.

An estate lawyer friend of mine is very busy right now.
Another friend's 15 year old realized that both of her parents are doctors and told her mom that if something happens to them she and her brothers want to live with me and Graham.

My cousin and I inherit a couple kids if one couple in my family, both of whom have compromised immune systems, kick the bucket.
I guess we'll split them up. Send one to live in London and keep one here. "Sorry, someone has to play Solomon. Say goodbye to your brother." Or we could flip a coin. But I'm cautious. Better to accept Cost X than a chance of Cost XX. College is very expensive.

It goes without saying I hope you and your family are safe. I've a spouse who's exposed to possible infection, but not to the extent yours is. I'm really sorry you and she have to go through this.

We did an extended family conference call yesterday, had about 25 sibs and nieces and nephews on at once. It was good, the family get together we haven't been able to have for about a decade because everyone was just too busy.
I know have the second relative with coronavirus. First one, in Vietnam, has now pretty much recovered and is good.

Every year, my wife sees otherwise healthy, middle-aged people die from the flu. It isn't necessarily a genetic predisposition or underlying condition. Not everything is fated. There is also bad luck.

It's an anti-bacterial pill, so (a) he's not getting it now that he's on a ventilator; (b) there is no treatment for Covid-19, so what they're doing is treating the symptoms; and (c) once his lungs are weakened by the virus, he's at risk for other conditions like pneumonia, and they may have been trying to head that off.
