I see your ambitions are taking you out from in front of the camera into the writer's chair! Excellent.

But just keep in mind, this scene needs more random, graphic sex. Though it's hard to visualize now that it's hit the big time, Slave Shoe Diaries started as a Kantian musing on the experience of Shafters. Even if the general subject matter was correct, focus groups showed us that having you in a smoking jacket, pipe, and holding a copy of Henry V just didn't get the story moving, if you know what I mean.

Slave & club: Marshall has finally explained what he was alluding to re the FT story and the Niger uranium. It sounds like all roads lead back to Rome -- Italian intelligence.

Been out of town and haven't caught this. Post a link if you have it.

It's yesterday's news (and then some). What's your call for the jobs report? Serious question -- I'm wondering what effect the rise in interest rates will have.

Tough call. The June numbers surprised me a little, but I think it was primarily due to the bad news in Iraq in Q2 and seasonality. Given the slow down in growth in Q2 (to 3.0% from 4+%, I think we will be lucky to crack 200K. 150K more likely.

New topic. Since you are so concerned with deficits, how will Kerry pay for the new spending he has proposed in this speech? The WSJ ran an article on Friday that crunches the numbers, and if they are right, it looks like the defecits will be even bigger under Kerry. Essentially, Kerry seems to think he can make up some ground on the deficit with the tax increase, but at the same time is proposing a good deal more spending.

I didn't listen to the speech so I don't know what the particular programs were. I haven't seen the WSJ article, but a recent Economist article suggested that his proposed spending increases (as of that point) and tax increases were a wash.

A wash isn't good enough, and a deficit increase is even worse. I agree, Kerry needs to do better.

I would disagree that deficits under Kerry would be worse than under Bush, because Bush is pushing more tax cuts and making the last ones permanent. I believe -- not certain -- that many if not most of the Bush tax cuts have not yet come into effect, so the effect on the budget is only beginning to be felt. Bush is proposing, and for four years has been enacting, cutting taxes while increasing spending. Kerry is proposing increasing taxes while increasing spending. Both are shitty approaches, but one is less shitty than the other. And since Cthlhu isn't running....

In the end, I suspect that if Kerry is elected he won't be able to push through any major spending increases, in part because Repubs will control at least one if not both the House and Senate. I think some balance in the fed gov't will have a salutary effect.

I suppose so.

But, club, I think most folks don't define an extra 2% of income taxes as "tyranny."

P.S. "Stronger at Home. Respected Abroad" -- I really like that motto. (Positive, but with a nice implied slap.)

P.P.S. Pretty ballsy to Bush to criticize Kerry as having accomplished little in his public career. His major accomplishment as Governor of Texas was to execute a lot of people. His record since then has been mixed, at best.

"Good intentions do not always translate into results." The epitaph for his Presidency?

Speaking of the dead, it looks like JFK has trouble interacting with some of his potential future charges; outside of photo-ops, I mean.

'Believe' tour off to a bumpy start
Kerry's 21-state trip gets a mixed reception during its first day out

By JULIE MASON

SCRANTON, PA. - The Democratic presidential ticket of John Kerry and John Edwards worked Friday to spread the energy, beginning a national bus tour hours after the Boston convention.

In Newburg, N.Y., they made an unscheduled stop to celebrate John and Elizabeth Edwards' 27th anniversary.

The couple observed their anniversary tradition of a meal at Wendy's, a nod to their early married days when it was all they could afford.

Kerry joined them inside and spied a table of Marines. But when he struck up a conversation, the Marines answered tersely and expressed irritation.

"He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here to shake our hands," said one, who did not give his name.

I'm sure it's a "Marines hate the Navy" thing, but still, its sounds bad to people who don't realize its just inter-service tension.

And, he seems to recognize the Dems have fucked up the Federal Courts by preventing Judges taking the bench. He thinks if OBL is still alive and gets caught, we'll have to rely on State Courts.

Quote:
Kerry, whose convention speech emphasized national security and foreign policy, said in an interview with The Associated Press that he would put Osama bin Laden on trial in U.S. courts.

That would ensure the "fastest, surest route" to a murder conviction if the terrorist mastermind is captured while he is president, Kerry said

"I want him tried for murder in New York City, and in Virginia and in Pennsylvania," where planes hijacked by al-Qaida operatives crashed Sept. 11, 2001, he said.
Here P.

Is that all it is? It sure isn't going to do much for the deficit, then . . .

Ha ha ha ha ha ha [snort]. Shit that's funny. Republicans lost any right to bitch about the judicial nomination process in approximately 1995.

Silence!
