As to personal income taxes, he said he'd "roll back the tax cuts for the 2% of wealthiest Americans making over $200K per year. So, I assume that's the repeal of the Bush tax breaks (which would mean adding back 2-3 percentage points onto the current rates -- so would be more than 2-3% increase in terms of taxes those folks paid).

Then there is, of course, corporate taxes, and "ending corporate welfare." The usual.

Actually, if we're able to mostly pull out of Iraq by the end of Kerry's first term that would get him a long way towards his promise to cut the record Bush II deficits in half by then.

1. Reflect on successful speech yesterday in Pittsburgh. Gotta remember asking my detail to find the audience member who said they loved me, get 'em a keychain or something. I chuckled when I heard that Kerry has a few hecklers at some of his speeches. Gosh, it's nice attending rallies where they filter out the Democrats at the security cordon.

2. Tomorrow, Southwest Missouri State. Ask Karl what their mascot is, work into extemporaneous remarks (Card #34).

3. To-Do List on Exterminating Terrorist Scourge and Spreading Joys of Democratic Freedom just keeps getting longer, darn it. Can't scratch off Iraq yet, Cheney keeps adding North Korea, and now the press is picking up on the Iranian ties to terrorists extensive enough to make Wolfie blush.

Now it looks like I'll have to worry about Venezuela, too, if that numbnut Chavez makes it through his recall. Sure wish that coup had succeded.

Recall the Philly Cheesesteak debacle, when Monsieur Kerry, unfamiliar with such pedestrian fare, ordered it with swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato, and tried to eat it with a knife and fork.

I agree on the hero thing. It also struck me as very Texan. Without intending to denegrate the rest of the country, including my adopted fair home of Maryland, I've known a lot of Texans who would take such a direct approach to what they would perceive as a local problem: her motive is looking at her neighbors who can't afford the drugs, and she's doing fine taking profits only on the orders covered by insurance, what the hell. She's just being a good neighbor.

Now that the article's out, of course, she's going to be bombarded by folks looking for cheap drugs, which I'm sure she never anticipated, and which is kind of too bad.

The point is not the amount. It is the principle of a majority making decisions concerning the property of the minority. I know most of you think I'm a whack job on taxes, but please tell me how this is morally defensible. Most defences I've heard relate to the fact that the minority gets more benefit from the system, but I don't think this really withstands scrutiny if you attempt to quantify the benefits.

As to how this plays vis a vis the deficet Kerry also suggested additional cuts for the 98%, as well as some additional cuts for business. At the same time, he has proposed, according to the WSJ article, a couple of trillion in new spending.

And the insurance companies will be pissed that they're being charged a higher price for drugs. And one of those insurance companies likes to sic their OIG and the DOJ on well meaning healthcare entities for "any knowing or willful solicitation or receipt of any remuneration (including any kickback, bribe, or rebate) directly or indirectly, in cash or in kind, in return for referrals of services reimbursable by any federal health care program." Discounting programs in the past have been under very close scrutiny.

So are you against all taxes? Or just anything that goes past a flat tax? Are you against other instances in which the majority enacts rules that affect the minority? Against regulation of businesses? Criminal penalties?

As for the "more benefit" argument, the greater income alone is reflective of that benefit. Could you make your above-average salary without a government?
