Democracy

Apparently the new security arrangement in Fallujah has resulted in a de facto installation of sharia as the local law of the land. This Chron article is rather melodramatic ("a glimpse of what a future Iraq may look like"? Settle down, fellas), but it does kind of point out that the word "democracy" isn't a magic incantation that will make things right over there.

Quote:
With U.S. Marines gone and central government authority virtually nonexistent, Fallujah resembles an Islamic mini-state -- anyone caught selling alcohol is flogged and paraded in the city. Men are encouraged to grow beards and barbers are warned against giving "Western" hair cuts.

"After all the blood that was shed, and the lives that were lost, we shall only accept God's law in Fallujah," said cleric Abdul-Qader al-Aloussi, offering a glimpse of what a future Iraq may look like as the U.S.-led occupation draws to a close. "We must capitalize on our victory over the Americans and implement Islamic sharia laws."
This all reminds me of one of my favorite GWB nonanswers back when Russert asked him about this very possibility on Meet the Press in February:

Quote:
Russert: If the Iraqis choose, however, an Islamic extremist regime, would you accept that, and would that be better for the United States than Saddam Hussein?

President Bush: They're not going to develop that. And the reason I can say that is because I'm very aware of this basic law they're writing. They're not going to develop that because right here in the Oval Office I sat down with Mr. Pachachi and Chalabi and al-Hakim, people from different parts of the country that have made the firm commitment, that they want a constitution eventually written that recognizes minority rights and freedom of religion.

I'm going to take that to mean that someone, somewhere laughed at my Rule Against Perpetuities joke from yesterday.

Mine. I put the bible thumping schtick in Gin Rummy's posts to throw you off.

You know, if you were nicer to me I wouldn't have to make up socks to befriend me.

I am reminded of when I was in the student senate [scroll now, war story coming] and I could make a snarky comment about a bill that was solely intend to rile the other "senators" up. Inevitably, they took the bait, earnestly expousing and excoriating, several of them speaking with vim and vigor, letting no comment with which they disagreed go unrebutted. They would waste 30 minutes responding vehemently, before outvoting me 27-1 (or whatever). Then they blamed me when the meetings ran 4.5 hours (or whatever) as I drank my (student-group boycotted) Coors beer and ate my (student-group boycotted) table grapes with a Coors-drinking, grape-eating grin on my face. The odd "senator" with a brain would occasionally ask others why they bothered to respond, but your type (and by that I mean not just you Ty, but all of y'all) is congenitally incapable of letting the comment pass, as if somehow that will make it true. Thus are born twelve page letters responding to eight page letters. Try"ignore" - it works wonders, and you will get to wipe the grape-eating grin off someone's face.
Me likey the life-affirming subtext of this little parable, but you must admit that the context (the student senate?) leaves something to be desired. Even the gratuitous Coors references cannot fully erase the mental images that this tale creates -- of gavels, pocket protectors, and white short-sleeve shirts.

Suggest that you retell it, but somehow center it around (say) Moldovans.

UN tax dollars

maybe they could put a voluntary box to donate $5 to the UN on our tax return forms. For now I won't check it, but some of you might. Oh, by the way...

Israel Channel 10: Armed Palestinians Use UN Ambulances in War against IDF

Tuesday 25/05/2004 17:38

Israel channel 10 aired yesterday Inon Maga'l item showing armed Palestinians use UNRWA ambulances to flee undercover.

Photographs taken at the Gaza Zeintun neighborhood about two weeks ago, on the same night the first APC was exploded, clearly show armed Palestinians boarding a UN-marked ambulance with a UN flag, and flee the scene.

The reporter stressed that this was not a Palestinian Red Cross ambulance, known to have transported armored Palestinians since the outbreak of events, but rather a supposedly neutral ambulance of the UN.

breakingnews that Sidd and the other effette liberals won't see on Pravda

.......or its American affiliates ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN tonite.

The Iraqi connection to 911 and al Qaeda exposed. The Iraqi connection to 911 and al Qaeda exposed. Again.

GASP!

This cannot be true! Surely these documents are frauds.

Kerry and his comrade democrappers have assured us that their Eurosocialist sources and others friends and allies of bin laden and Saddam and Arafat said there is no connection here. Nothing to see. Move along.

Damn, even Dan Rather and the leftist inteligentsia at the Washington Post have said that there was no connection. And the leftist conspirators would surely know what their co-conspirators are up to.

No matter, as the left wing media will let this canard die a quick death as it does not advance of the fifth columnist goal of the destruction of America. Plus there are no phonie pictures of sexual abuse to include.
