I didn't see last week, but I was very pleasantly surprised by last night's show. I saw Ralphie, the 400 pounder, open up for Jay Mohr. That night was the funniest comedy show I've ever seen, and Ralphie contributed heavily to that. He did this bit about Jack in the Box in the 'hood that I'll never forget involving "a Jumbo Jack for my baby mama and a shout out to the fry guy." He was very good last night. I can't believe they took stupid spiky haired girl and left off the girl who talked about going to India.

Anyways, should be a good show.
Totally spaced on watching this last night (tying threads together, I was actually cleaning a fucking bathroom). Ralphie did the Jack in the Box bit last week (and it was a cheese sandwich fo' my baby's mama, 'cause I'm a hustler). Very funny. Spikey-haired chick sucked last week, and I couldn't believe she made the next round. How was the Asian dude? Very funny in round 1, as was the gay guy (who may or may not have been stealing his jokes).

Of course. For an extra $25 per week, you get 10 beers. Keg beer of course, which costs about $.15 a glass.

Asian guy ("Dat") was awesome last night, and made the final 10. "I knew I was cut out for comedy when I was the only asian kid in my high school to fail math. And the 8 kids sitting around me failed too." Brilliant stuff.

To keep the target demographic up, other services like laundry could be built in as well for a low monthly fee...

This is a regional chain, but presumably there are similar chains in other areas of the country. It might interest you budding entrepreneurs that Luby's performance has been crappy.
I suppose the difference would be the location and the target market. None of this shopping center, senior citizen focused crap. I'm talking walking distance for people who live on top of each other. Highly congested urban locales. Also, it would NEVER be referred to as a "cafeteria". That just screams squaresville. Maybe call it "The Hub".

I was thinking the same thing. I assume that most people also don't get the Luanne Platter joke on King of the Hill.

AMERICAN JUNIORS:

I laughed when one of the kids said he wanted to be a superstar. But if it didn't work out, a lawyer.

They are all sweet with the kids. The talent is remarkably high for the singers. Justin was probably the biggest star judge for the kids.

I saw him perform on one of the late night shows last night. They have done a fantastic job with his image. His performance and look were terrific. The song sucked, but it's marketable. (The OM's comment: "My friends wrote better shit than that when they were 18.")

LAST COMIC STANDING:

Ralphie did the Jack in the Box jokes last week, so he either changed his material up a bit or they didn't use that part of his act.

Now that I know Ralphie opened for Jay, his comments about having nothing to do with casting make more sense. He also said it about Rich Vos, who I have seen before, though I don't really like him much.

Sheeeeeyeah.

I'm betting Wrigleyville has a large share of old people who haven't sold out yet. You don't see them much, but they're there. They'll creep out of the woodwork for a cafeteria. Also, few chicks will go eat in a cafeteria now that they have escaped college. Thus you're left with old people and youngish guys. The youngish guys will leave because there aren't any chicks there.

Have fun with the elderly.

So basically it's the chicks' fault for wanting to seem more mature?

Damn. Chicks are stupid. And who "escapes" college? I was forced out.

Hey, babe, I'm just trying to keep you from losing all your money on an ill-considered venture. Don't shoot the messenger (or her entire gender).

Seriously (not really), I want to open a dining hall in a highly congested urban area where 22-25 yr olds live (Wrigleyville in Chicago for example). One could get a dining hall debit card and everything. It would be just like college. In fact, I would wager that SOME young 'uns would be able to convince theire parents to pay for it (I'll just cook Ramen instead mom - don't you want me to eat a balanced meal?). Chicken patties would be flowing. Unlimited soft-serve ice cream. There would be alternative (i.e., healthy) dishes as well. What busy young person wouldn't LOVE this? Let's see, should I cook, or walk across the street to the dining hall where the food is decent and other people my age are hanging out? Eat and socialize before going out on the town. And you get your vegetables. And chicken patties!
I'm not seeing the allure of this. There are hundreds of restaurants around to eat in - many of them cheap.

With institutionalized food services these days (Sysco, Marriott (or whatever it is these days)), you're food is going to be consistently mediocre unless you want to spend big $$$ for higher level food prep.

Most dining halls and fraternities - or at least the classic notion of them - arose because in the towns where the colleges and universities were located, there was basically nothing else around to support the kids with. College towns serving schools like Dartmouth, Washington & Lee, Sewanee, and others simply didn't the restaurants/boarding houses to serve 1500 - 3000 kiddies on a daily basis. So, the fraternities and clubs stepped in.

While I'm not making a million a year, yet, the notion of returning to the days of daily soft-serve, make your own waffles, and cereal that comes out of 5 gallon dispensers does turn my stomach a little.

Asian was very funny. He said he knew comedy was for him when he was the only asian to fail math. as did the eight people sitting near him. hilarious. the motherjumpin huge guy was hilarious. this is clearly the year of the fat man bc that guy is gonna win. i do not recall if the gay guy made it to the next round but would love to know. He did something along these lines "recognize my accent? san francisco". I was kind of glad to see the neurotic soprano wannabe not make it. he was so narcissistic. and that guy Rob with the chin pubes from NYC was pretty funny too. I think he thinks he already won it. He didnt. Should be funny to watch a hourseful of self loathing comics.

the truly disturbing phenomena of this show was Phyllis Diller. Alzheimers appears to be setting in , yet there is not a wrinkle in sight.

I was kidding re: the chicks comment (I thought it was obvious). Thanks for your feedback.

Has anyone seen America's Next Top Model?

It's about as engrossing as the hot dog contest--somehow it sucks you in like a bad car accident. It's hosted by Tyra Banks on Tuesdays and has a number of interesting caricatures...there's the insecure girls who are constantly fishing for compliments or give up their dream to be a model because they have a fight with their boyfriends; there's the anorexic, know-it-all, pre-med student; the drugged out, biker whore; the angry lesbian woman of color; the bible-thumping, Christian evangelicals who cannot utter a sentence without Jesus or Lord in it.

Also, have to put in a plug for MTV's Surf Girls, which is essentially Blue Crush meets reality TV. The girls are all really young and in incredibly good shape. Not surprisingly, they are more mature than the models.

John in the Box

How long until this thing shows up on ebay? More importantly, will it fetch a higher price than the ghost in a jar??
