With institutionalized food services these days (Sysco, Marriott (or whatever it is these days)), you're food is going to be consistently mediocre unless you want to spend big $$$ for higher level food prep.
Most dining halls and fraternities - or at least the classic notion of them - arose because in the towns where the colleges and universities were located, there was basically nothing else around to support the kids with. College towns serving schools like Dartmouth, Washington & Lee, Sewanee, and others simply didn't the restaurants/boarding houses to serve 1500 - 3000 kiddies on a daily basis. So, the fraternities and clubs stepped in.
While I'm not making a million a year, yet, the notion of returning to the days of daily soft-serve, make your own waffles, and cereal that comes out of 5 gallon dispensers does turn my stomach a little.

When I used to work at the WTC, there was a dining hall type institution run by Marriott. They made unbelievalbe omelettes. So, if this idea would work, why hasnt Marriott glommed onto it yet? Also, most of us associate dining hall food with cereal three times a day and packing on pounds that didnt come off til we moved off campus and switched from beer to coke and acid.
And ,for the samme amount of money, you could get a tasty burrito.
I think the draw is the fact that it would be all youngsters (and the 32 yo men who prey upon them) and the seating style of those places welcomes meeting new people which is hard to do once you are out of college and not in a world of people your own age and economic status.
And I would name it "Dining Hall".

I'm not seeing the allure of this either. "Chicks" (at least this one) don't generally like cafeteria food or the "all you can eat" concept. Gross. Typically unhealthy also. Butter and oil makes huge vats of crap less sticky!!!!! (or so I was told when I complained during college)
I recall thinking that my parents were being ripped off by the meal plan at my college because it was a flat fee for each meal, and I typically would have, say, an apple and a diet coke. If I had the option of simply buying the apple and the diet coke I would have done that and saved major coin. Now I have that option. And if I want an actual good meal, I will go to a nice restaurant and order an actual good meal.
I don't even go to fast food restaurants because I hate the concept of carrying my own food to table and using paper napkins to sop the grease off the "food." Yuck. Screw any restaurant where you can't get a cocktail, and screw Applebees or Bennigan's or TGIFriday's too. Oh--and screw anyplace that serves meals "family style." If I wanted family style, I would have brought my mom and dad.

You're absolutely right. But I think people are slowly making the transition to more healthy food and away from McDonalds (and McDowell's - the Big Mic!). Maybe the healthy dishes could be the focus, with the post college frat-guy meals as the alternative (burritos, pizza, pizza puffs, gyros, cheese fries, etc - now I'm hungry)...
I actually don't think it would work, but I wanted to toss the idea around.

I saw the dark-cropped-haired girl complaining about how "vapid" the others were--what the hell did she expect?--and the one who was praying every six seconds (like "Lord, protect me from this snake!" when they're draping one over her bathing suit). I'm sure Jesus'll be gratified that she's chosen a career where she's paid to wear less than Mary Magdalene did when on the job. ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](http://www.lawtalkers.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)

How is this guaranteed? I can see a nice load of 72ers deciding that its the quaint little joint for their bridge games after chicken frisbees are served - don't forget the green Jell-O.

Point taken. But you're not my target clientele. You're too old and you make too much money. You can afford to go to a nice restaurant. And I revised to say that health food would be the focus.

Are these like those frozen mini-quiches my mom made for us in the early eighties?
Abba's right and apparently was anorexic in college according to the tracey gold how to get down to 92 pounds manual. No chicks. This place sounds like a hangout for closeted frat guys and NAMBLA members.

Well Mr. Risk Averse, it's not guaranteed.

People who need a cafeteria
Fuckedcompany.com is reporting that Arter Hadden will be disbanding next week without severance for anyone.
Can anyone confirm or deny??

That is why you now have places like Chevy's, Whole Foods market (eating tables), Baja Fresh, and Sutton Place Gourmet.

Chicago only has Whole Foods, and HOLY SHIT it's FUCKING EXPENSIVE. The fact that NOT adding preservatives/additives to food costs MORE than adding them really chaffs my ass.

McDonald's chipotle grill is actually pretty good. Not as good as our local versions (mmmm . . . changos), but everything is incredibly fresh.

Certain things there ARE expensive. I would never buy Tropicana Pure Premium from Whole Foods. Just go to Safeway. Clearly, they're attempting to keep the price insensitive crown fully served.
That being said, I am willing to pay a somewhat higher price for their fruit and veggies - which I deem to be much better quality than Safeway or Giant (the two big chains in D.C.).
Or, eat the salad bar for $4.99 a pound. The chowder is damn right tastey as well.
