Anyone know any college kids? Suggest a paper called "Jesus as Narcissistic Drama Queen"

I think you were talking about Zecharia and Elizabeth and the birth of John the Baptist rather than Mary. The other mentionable details to that story being that since Zecharia didn't believe Gabriel who appeared in the temple to tell Zechariah Elizabeth was pregnant, Zechariah was mute until after the baby was born and he confirmed by writing on a tablet that the baby was to be named John, as Gabriel directed.
THEN PLEASE EXPLAIN how Mary's mom got the original sin exception? Is it all post hoc rationaliztion? Sersiously, I am curious. I have learned a lot today.

1)how did Mary's mom get an exception for the original sin deal?
Mary got the pass on the Original Sin, not her mom. Cuz she was chosen (pre birth) to have God's kid. Can't taint God's kid.

2)was the "tree of knowledge" an actual tree or was this a metaphor? What was the fruit? Pomegranate? I thought they fucked and that was the problem, but also a necessity since they were the only two people around and had to do it. Which would make us all brothers and sisters- there , problem between catholics and protestants solved!
Mr. Green, the decon who taught me religion in fourth grade, said that it was a metaphor. The various sisters kathleen, theresa, and maurine that taught me later on never went into whether or not it was a metaphor. Traditionally, it was an apple. The fruit was forbidden, and he ate it anyways. They sought out the knowledge, got kicked out of Eden, and the rest of us are cursed. Probably a hell of a lot more interesting this way.

3) if Mary Magdalene was a prostitute (which I assume was a bad thing), how did she get such a high ranking gig?
Lucky for you, I recently listened to the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack:

(Judas)
It seems to me
A strange thing mystifying
That a man like you
Can waste his time
On women of her kind
Yes I can understand
That she amuses
But to let her stroke you
Kiss your hair
Is hardly in your line
It’s not that I object
To her profession
But she doesn’t fit in well
With what you teach and say
It doesn’t help us
If you are inconsistant
They only need a small excuse
To put us all away

(Jesus)
Who are you
To criticize her
Who are you
To despise her
Leave her, leave her
Let her be now
Leave her, leave her
She’s with me now
If your slate is clean
Then you can throw stones
If your slate is not
Then leave her alone
I’m amazed that men like you
Can be so shallow, thick, and slow
There is not a man among you
Who knows or cares if I come or go

4) I thought Jesus was put to death against his will, for his beliefs. Did he intend to expunge the sin or whatnot? DId he have a clue?
He went willingly. Prior to the whole shebang, he went into the desert and railed against the whole thing, questioned the whole god thing, but he came back and faced his (temporary) death.

Hmmm.. sounds like a buffy episode.

Speaking of Juicy couture, one big fashion "Oh my God! Please don't!" goes to the short pudgy woman in the pale blue terry sweatsuit with the word "JUICY" in big white letters across her big broad ass. I saw her today and was hard pressed not to comment.

Sorry Paigow, I'd love to help you out, but that was something I learned today, being non-Catholic myself.

Today has been fascinating, as the SO is DEVOUTLY Catholic and we frequently have "discussions" about the issue (still haven't resolved the kids problem yet though. Much of what he does and believes seems rather, sort of, idolatrous to me. I also passed on a discussion on one of the boards, I think about the priest/chld molestation thing and the Catholic church being the Whore of Babylon, and he was not amused.

Please note that to avoid being Atticusian, I deleted an extended post in response to SD's Holy Spirit questions.

Close enough. Keep in mind it's all a peregrination from basic Catholic theology about Mary. The Church gathered up a bunch of saint stories that people already believed, and picked and chose which ones were consistent with its Christology, which was a moving target until Pope Gregory. The rest of the folk legends were condemned or suppressed. So we're left with traditions that are logically "necessary" to the doctine of original sin, which is that Mary's uterus was some kind of sinless "clean room" from which Jesus could be birthed. For the uterus to be sinless and magical, Mary's birth had to be sinless and magical. Somehow, it took the Church until 1854 to come up with this.

Frankly, I think the Marian devotion types do a lot of damage to basic Christian principles. Only the Opus Dei types know everything about it and believe it at the same time. I mean, when you're basing it on Gabriel's salutation to Mary, "chaire kecharitomene" (hail, full of grace), you're pushing the bounds of credibility.

So, if the dude ate the apple why is it that women got the whole "you'll bleed like a fucking pig for a few days each month and giving birth will be nearly unbearable" punishment? What punishment did men get? This is assuming, of course, that I am correct about the punishment -- maybe it was in some PLanet of the Apes movie and I am confused. To go along with that, if a woman gets an epidural is she skirting God's punishment of birth being painful? And why does the period punishment run out at menopause -- does God figure the woman has suffered enough?

Note: My periods are light and I have never had cramps but I know people that suffer greatly when the "monthly visitor" is around so I must inquire about the whole punishment thing.

edited to ask if anyone else noticed that we are on page 666 of the forum????

The punishment for disobeying God's directive not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was (i) that women and snakes hate each other, (ii) pain in childbearing, and (iii) men will have to work to provide food and shelter, etc. because the cushy Eden gig was ruined.

Oh, so the period wasn't involved then? My bad. Maybe the punishment for men is that women hate "snakes." Would someone please explain the work to provide food and shelter punishment to my husband -- apparently he never got the memo.
