well, that statement is wrong. It was a merger, but AT&T was made the bitch of SBC, although SBC took the higher-value name (or didn't want to sully the SBC name).
As for transitional period, i guess you really have to fuck things up to have existing customers get screwed by the integration of new customers (those formerly served by AT&T) into the system.
My condolences. I hope your cellphone is not Cingular.

I wonder why they changed the name of the baseball field to ATT Park then?
Yeah, the paralegal's boyfriend worked for SBC and his office was a casualty.
Cell phone is currently Verizon, but is going to change the minute my contract is up. Coverage is great everywhere except the 2 places I use it 99% of the time - home and office.

Because, as Burger noted, "SBC took the higher-value name"--the name itself was a meaningful asset. Yes, the company's name is now ATT, the ticker symbol is T, but the company remains headquartered in SBC's hometown--San Antonio and the CEO of new ATT was the CEO of SBC. Tell me you don't actually do deal work--this is not an uncommon occurence.

Not only that, but SBC can now amortize the value of that name of 15 years. But that's just boring tax shit, so I'll drop it.

Blackberry 8700c
Does anyone have one of these? I'm leaning towards getting one -- although I hate Cingular, the Treo 650 is too glitchy/unreliable. I'll use it primarily for wireless e-mail. I don't need a camera, mp3 player, game-playing ability, extensive 3rd-party apps, etc. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
CDF

I finally got my firm to update me from the 5790 I've been carrying around for the last few years by losing it last weekend. Now I have a 72-something by the looks of it. No phone, but I'm not paying for it. Internet access was new to me as well, though I have not figured out how to create socks on it yet. If you're up in the 8000s I don't have much to ass.
I will say the old one was extremely reliable and so far this new one seems very easy to use with lots of design flaws fixed since the old days. Shorter battery life, though.

A few folks here use them. Slick devices. Solid and fast (they use the EDGE e-GPRS high-speed network). They work very well as a phone, as well.

SBC --> AT&T
SBC bought AT&T. SBC changed name to AT&T. AT&T did not have any local phone service to speak of so there was nothing to merge there. The people who are handling your local service are still SBC people. The people who run the company are SBC people (ask anyone who used to do legal work for ATT!). The only area where there are lots of AT&T people sticking around is the long-distance business.
The merger that *is* in the works and could conceivably have some effects (though probably not on legacy-SBC local phone service) is the acquisition of BellSouth.

Uh, not so much so. It was a stock acquisition, and tax-free to boot.

Let me know how the phone works. I can't stand having both a phone and a blackberry (7000 series - can't hear a damn thing when using the phone).

My bad. Of course, I would have spotted and intentionally made the horrid boot pun.

Treo
In the process of switching jobs, larger firm to in-house (local office of an NGO). Had a Treo 600 with my old firm, and now have a choice, Treo 650 or 700W (it's my discretion, the employer does not care). Verizon is the carrier, which has high speed networking for the 700W but not the 650.
Advice? Pros/cons?
Thanks in advance.
