Joining the off topic crowd, now, are you, Hank.
Can you honestly tell me that you don't think whoever leaked the memo had a reason for leaking it?

Someone leaked that memo for a reason. What, you think some hack or military officer, in each case with their jobs on the line, just calls up the press and says, hey, get a load of this memo for no reason at all?

memo leaked- okay, agree
for a political reason? d'accord
to f' Rummy- okay maybe
by Rummy to do whatever weirdness Ty suggests? sorry no.
30% of the country opposed the war. some of them (smaller percentage) work at DoD. Certainly there are a lot of reasons one may leak something. and you'll all been in modern offices- secrets seep out. c'mon now.
edit: patience is a virtue- please don't interupt when I'm correcting ty.

If Rummy leaked it himself it's a desperation move, which is why I suspect it was leaked to screw Rummy. But I've heard intelligent, knowledgable folks, including Republicans, speculate that it was Rummy. (Of course, I think those Rs are less fond of Rummy than I am).
Yes, I work in a modern office dealing with highly sensitive things. If we're doing a big public deal, lots of care is taken to maintain secrecy and things don't just leak out. But there is a lot less on the line here than there is in Rummy's office, so I'm sure their security is pretty good.

I've lately been thinking that it's either an administration leak or a Rummy lead. Administration leak because, if read carefully, it shows that the Adminstration really has drilled down on this (in contrast to the DEMS portaryal of events and lack of specific substance in respect of their own plan). Rummy leak because I think it reflects very well on him and he may have wanted to milk his EGO/reassert dominance.

Another paranoid in the crowd!
But, on a serious note, why would any leak reflect favorably on Rummy, since part of his job involves keeping memoranda like this secure? Yes, the discussion in it may be self-serving historically, but keeping the press' story on the substance is, well, about as easy as keeping this board on topic.

You're the only one talking about conspiracies. I'm not sure who leaked it, and just meant to suggest why Rumsfeld would have done it, if he did it. I guess I'm inclined to think that he didn't want to leak it, since it's contents are so dramatically at odds with the story the Administration is trying to sell. But I've seen sgtclub (a few days ago, not just an hour ago) and the editorial page of the New York Times suggest otherwise, so reasonable people of different views might conclude Rummy leaked it.

efforts to reduce "white trash" jokes as being offensive.

the onliest ones what can make fun of me now, is any of you from the South. Ty no more saying anything mean.
article makes the point that only people in the groups get to make jokes about the groups. Hispanic comic can make hispanic jokes etc., so only Foxworthy can make redneck jokes. not clear if a non-hispanic can laugh at the hispanic comic.

WASHINGTON, DC—Responding to recent criticism of reconstruction efforts in Iraq, the U.S. Defensive Department released a statement to the public Monday suggesting that perhaps they could do better, since they're obviously so smart.*

I think its at least partly a play on the recent Chicago fire story. Specifically, the part where, after 6 dead people and numerous injured were not found in a stairwell for something like 90 minutes after a fire was reported (or struck), the fire chief indicated the fire department would not have done anything differently even if they could go back and try. AFAIK, there were two stairwells. It was so offensive that he was back on Monday to partially change his tune. Of course, the Chicago story may have been the motivation for the lines only, not the actual subject of the story.

It originated at U of Wisconsin (or so my Badger friends tell me), but my guess is that it is now published in Chicago. This is only a guess, because I am too lazy to google. Carry on.

Edited to add: Oh yeah, NY gets their own edition next year, so it won't feel so left out.

If anyone still doubts that FOX is ideologically biased, here is an account from the inside, from someone who worked there for six years.
- The fact is, daily life at FNC is all about management politics. I say this having served six years there - as producer of the media criticism show, News Watch, as a writer/producer of specials and (for the last year of my stay) as a newsroom copy editor. Not once in the 20+ years I had worked in broadcast journalism prior to Fox - including lengthy stays at The Associated Press, CBS Radio and ABC/Good Morning America - did I feel any pressure to toe a management line. But at Fox, if my boss wasn't warning me to "be careful" how I handled the writing of a special about Ronald Reagan ("You know how Roger [Fox News Chairman Ailes] feels about him."), he was telling me how the environmental special I was to produce should lean ("You can give both sides, but make sure the pro-environmentalists don't get the last word.")
