This makes me sad. In High School I made myself a "Bucky Fellini" shirt. I really liked those guys. I'll tip a little Diet Dr. Pepper out for Dave today.

Seriously, I agree it's very sad, especially when I read the circumstances.

It brings back memories for me also. When in college, I worked security at the front of the stage and did some setup for a show they played on my campus -- (I got the gig b/c my brother was part of the CPB at the time.) Fun night -- good crowd.

I got to hang out with them a bit before and after the show. They were all pretty cool guys and Dave was probably the most genuinely nice/down-to-earth person in the bunch.

(Confidential to str8: I think that actually now moves me beyond you in the indie cred category, for those keeping score at home.)

In memory of Dave, I share with you the following conversation with my father:

baltassoc [opening birthday present, at least 15 years ago]: "The Dead Milkmen! Thanks, Dad."
baltdad: "Well, I was in the music store looking for something for you, and I came across this cd, and I thought, 'How can I not get an album named "Beelzebubba."'"
baltassoc: "Well, yah, cool."
baltdad: "So I asked the clerk 'Do you think my teenage son would like this?' and he said 'Absolutely, if he's cool enough.'"
baltassoc: "It's great, Dad."
baltdad: "So I wasn't sure, but I figured I'd get it for you anyway."
baltassoc: "Um.........Yah. Thanks?"

eta: this probably moves me to the end of the line in terms of indie cred

Actually, I find it fascinating. This is just a different version of a question I've asked before, and which has previously caused long and unseemly "debate" on this board, but why do so many people have such a visceral negative reaction to the overweight? And it's not a "you're ugly," or "you have a yucky unhealthy condition," or "you are not in my socio-economic class" type of negative reaction, it is ... something else. It really seems to be taken as an outward expression of character.

Note, I'm not talking about the pleasantly plump BMI of 26 or 27 type of fat, I mean actual obesity. I am well aware that certain cultures favor the very fat, but, frankly, I don't think negative views of obesity are necessarily a learned or socially determined reaction (though I was surprised when I realized the extent to which I've "upgraded" what I consider to be really obese vs. plump over the last 10-15 years, based purely on the fact that so many people are so much fatter, such that one immediate family member went from seeming really fat to seeming not-svelt without losing a pound just because everyone around her seems to be expanding so much). I sometimes have the same reaction myself, and I come from a family well stocked with the rotund; Heck, I hardly have a flat ass myself. And yet ... there just seems to be something else going on, and I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. I've a close friend who is just about the only non-obese female in her entire extended family in living memory and we've discussed it quite a bit and she can't figure out where the negative reaction (which she also feels) comes from any better than I can.

To paraphrase a great musical scholar of our age, a punk rock band whose ouevre consists of novelty songs may be loads of fun when you are young and drunk, but they do not give you much in terms of indie cred.

Anyway, the fat-bashing is both annoyingly repetitive and unseemly. Y'all should know better.
There was no fat-bashing. The thread was about abrogation of personal responsibility. When certain people are told they should be responsible for themselves, they call it bashing. The "fatties are stupid" comment was clearly tongue in cheek. If you didn't realize that, you're obviously fat.

But whose character? It's so visceral that it seems to me to be best explained by other parts of psychology -- think, e.g., projection.

In honor of the up-coming Easter holiday and in the time-honored FB tradition of posting silly web links I give you that AIR classic - Peep Surgery.

First, your "abrogation of personal responsibility" line is total bullshit. You're making a moral judgment about people you don't even know. You presume that everyone who is fat pretends that they are fat for reasons entirely beyond their control. I haven't met these people who are in denial. I sincerely doubt that you have, I think you make them up when you quote them. You judge fat people before you ever even talk to them (in much the same way you dismiss stay at home mothers as vapid women with nothing to say).

Second, I obviously recognized that the fatties are stupid comment was meant to be tongue in cheek (and I think Not Bob did, too), but you have said that so many times before and clearly meant it sincerely, that the mere fact that it was tongue in cheek this time does not render you immune from being criticized as a fat basher.

Third, I really hope your suggestion that only a person who is fat herself would describe your comments as fat bashing was also tongue in cheek. If it wasn't, I don't care whether you think I'm fat or thin, because if you think that offense can only stem from personal insecurity about something, then that really does reflect poorly on you. I'd rather have you believe I'm unattractive or unhealthy or fail to take responsibility for my weight (or whatever justification you use to explain your scorn for fat people) than prove that I am unwilling to take responsibility for my own statements, as you apparently are.

According to this, I border on obsese (29.4 BMI). I could afford to lose 15 lbs, but I don't Darth Vader breathe, I wear size 36 jeans, and exercise regularly.
