This could be said about nearly every great small screen character.

No. An apology doesn't really matter because it is the percieved intent to use this word to denegrate a person of color that bothers us, not that he "slipped." The slip demonstrates a long-standing belief that came out. That's what's so unforgivable.
He had two choices: (1) Explain that because of drugs he was not in control of himself; or (2) he was using that situation to demonstrate that words have no meaning, and that he was trying to imitate Lenny Bruce and it really just went wrong -- he would never use that word and by using it he was demonstrating how the use of such words was wrong and ridiculous, almost comical really.
Now, if he would have said to the guy "shut the fuck up cracker" maybe he still resurrects his career.

Okay, apparently people have said that he can rap. I'll defer to the experts -- I don't contest that.
But am I the only person who can't get passed his white, nerdy voice? How is this guy taken seriously? The only difference b/w him and Weird Al is that Eminem is serious.
Or is that his draw? I want my rappers to be able to at least appear that they can kick my ass.
This post is what, about 6 years past its due date?

What, am I going to disagree with you?
He put himself in a hole so deep that he's never going to get out of it. There's no explaining what he did, but he's gotta be thinking about mitigating the damage. And talking about Katrina and his freestyle stage persona ain't cuttin' it.

You must be kidding. First, his career was effectively over before he took the stage last night. Second, everyone knows the truth is that he'll never find a role as close to that one again. Admitting that he's been having trouble and the frustration has been building isn't going to harm his career. His first priority is getting past the Nigger string. He can worry about the damage admitting his typecasting problem will have later. Much later.

I think people are willing to overlook his high, reedy-assed voice in view of the fact that lyrically he is pretty adept and is an above average rapper. Much of his "flow" he himself has admitted is while he is high. But whatever...he's good.
The Beastie Boys blew their load a long time ago. they try to reinvent but it's stale dude.

Yay penguins!

Penguins are overexposed. It's like ever since The March of the Penguins, people have been declaring their love for them. It makes me sick. Where were they when you could only see a penguin on the zoo cam? Hunh? Where were they then?
And this "Happy Feet" thing is an abomination. Penguin have feet of fury.

I wonder how this will affect sales of "The Real Kramer" Seinfeld tours.

Hey, you know that I've been there from the beginning, when all I had was the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I was there before Snopes uncovered the truth about www.penguinwarehouse.com. I was there when the penguins at the San Francisco zoo started migrating. I'm old skool.

I walk by that advertising sign plenty (corner of 55th and 8th, I think). Last time I did, I thought "why don't they take that ugly-ass thing down?" Does anyone go on that tour anymore?

I agree about why we're mad. And I think what I said covers his "slip."
But I disagree on whether an apology matters. A quick, well thought-out apology takes away a good part of the intial anger. A poor apology digs yourself a deeper hole because you have to address what the apology lacks as well.

(1) Nope. The whole drugs/alcohol thing is finished. It would work against him at this point. And he clearly isn't on drugs or alcohol in the video, which nearly everyone has watched.
(2) This would work if (i) people in general knew who Lenny Bruce was and (ii) weren't so fucking stupid. But this kind of nuanced, complicated excuse wouldn't be accepted by the people who don't get it and would be rejected by those of us who do, simply because it's complete bullshit.

Robert Altman doesn't.

Say you, he and I are in a room together before he went on stage (you mean before his show, not the apology?); Only 2 of would know this is true.
