What is this strange feeling? Could it be . . . joy?

1. Zinedane losing his mind;
2. Trezeguet missing a penalty, and
3. Flower actually willing to bet he knows more about football than me.

I was surprised to see Flower going through the motions of paying off the bet, or at least the appearences thereof. I was betting he'd go through a sock change before paying off the buck sixty.

What's that say about your country when the French players are more manly than yours? And yet, I was still rooting for Italia.
What does the rest of world think about Italy's (and Portugal's) style of play? Do they think that diving/flopping is "part of the game", or do they find it as reprehensible as Americans do?

As I think Ironweak (who is far, far more knowledgable about soccer than I am) has posted in the past, the English Premier League awards a yellow card for diving. I think (hope) that there is an ever-shortening tolerance for the practice everywhere.

And they wonder why NYers are so messed up
Err? Some useless advice from NY Magazine.
I especially am super appalled at the part that says spending time with your kids is as gratifying as washing dishes. Um, hello that is the most gratifying aspect of my life, um it's why I work...for them? Oh yeah and shopping at Bendel's is much more? Please they are a bunch of vapid morons--and it is true a ton of NYers are deeply unhappy. blech.

Perhaps. But the whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth. After what he did, I don't think he should have won it. Even I wouldn't have voted for him.
As much as I dislike saying so, I probably would have tipped Buffon or Cannavaro for the Golden Ball. Cannavaro played with class, grit and superlative skill. Buffon? Two out of three.
By the way, I haven't seen it suggested anywhere (and I didn't tape the match, so I can't check), but I suspect the Materazzi provocation wasn't a "terrorist" comment or a nipple grab. I think he probably tried to injure Zidane by deliberately hooking his right arm or shoulder. Earlier in the match, it looked like Zidane partially dislocated that shoulder or tore something up there when he landed badly. They stopped the game and focused on treating him; everyone on both sides was aware of it. I'm guessing Materazzi tried more than once to trap and twist that arm, they ended up having words (with Materrazi telling Zidane he would put him out for good), and Zidane concluded "you know what, if anyone's going to knock someone out of this game, I'm going to do it to you, you complete asshole."
Just a guess.

I'll second the first Two.
And now for conspiracy theory #1: Is this how Zidane skirts "retirement" and takes the Red Bulls' cash?

So I was 1 for 2.
I personally might have given it to Buffon.

My own:
Get a cheap undergrad degree.
If you do go to law school, repeat to yourself 10 times every day: "I'm in it for the money." But if you were in it for the money and had an ounce of your body that wasn't risk-averse, you would have gone to business school.
Only go to a therapist if you are attracted to him or her.
Don't go out with your ex or anyone else that you know's ex.
Buy the best and biggest TV you can fit in the house.
If you are going to send the kids off to day care, summer camp, or boarding school, send them early.
Only you can watch the great TV.
Buy cheap clothes. Knowing that you got a deal can make you happy as it's all useless shit anyway.
Check investments no more than once a month.
The only way to travel in NY is to walk.
Don't read the news.
Associating with losers make you feel better about yourself.

Having watched the game all over now, with people from all over, I would say that people from non-soccer loving countries like the U.S. (Australia, N.Z.) think the diving is not only shameful, but the sport should be allowed more contact.
The rest generally seem to hate diving by other teams given the yelling about it, deceive themselves into seeing a foul when there was none when it is there diver, or will say that it is part of the game and resist anything that would change the "flow" or its "history" and "traditions." However, I watched a little classic soccer on Eurosport and there was much less contact, diving, or players down on the pitch.
The logical conclusion is that the game/FIFA/refs/players/whatever have let it get worse, and, to not do it, is to self-hamper your team. If Henry had dove in the first half when he was contacted (twice) going to the goal in the penalty box, France would have likely won on his penalty kick. I blame the fans. They pay money and support a game more akin to ice dancing than sport.
