Please they are a bunch of vapid morons--and it is true a ton of NYers are deeply unhappy. blech.

Unfortunately, vapid morons do not limit their appearances to Bendel's, to NY Magazine, or to teen chat boards on the internet. No, this cutting-edge subset of morons refuses to be typecast.

The rest generally seem to hate diving by other teams given the yelling about it, deceive themselves into seeing a foul when there was none when it is there diver, or will say that it is part of the game and resist anything that would change the "flow" or its "history" and "traditions." However, I watched a little classic soccer on Eurosport and there was much less contact, diving, or players down on the pitch.
The logical conclusion is that the game/FIFA/refs/players/whatever have let it get worse, and, to not do it, is to self-hamper your team. If Henry had dove in the first half when he was contacted (twice) going to the goal in the penalty box, France would have likely won on his penalty kick. I blame the fans. They pay money and support a game more akin to ice dancing than sport.

They should review videotapes of games later and award yellow cards for diving.

real sport question
anybody understand the salary cap in the NBA?
Okay- Pistons offered Ben wallace 12 million/year for 4 years. He goes elsewhere- so the Pistons have 12 million in cap space to go get new guys, right? Wrong. they had 5 million only. what happened there?

He's the team captain, leader and most experienced player on the team and he lets himself get baited like that? And doesn't even get his money's worth? Fucking pathetic.

A somewhat amusing explanation from a local sports blog:
"poor z. got dragged out of retirement to play on the national team; then he embarrassed himself in the prelims and France just skated into the next round; so he had to really turn it on, and he did, and they make it into the finals;
"...all well and good, but as the second half wore on poor z realized he'd retired at the right time and had allowed himself, against his better judgement (and that of the cute little algerian honey he has set up in a cozy love nest in the 14th arrondisement), to be persuaded to come back for the WC (interesting conflation there)
"so z's tail is dragging and now it's flipping overtime and well...he just got fed up;
"what does a man do? he can't stop play and hold a news conference and announce his re-retirement; the only possibility is a red card; but he's a great champion - he has to make it a defining moment (remember he's suffering from dehydration at this point) so he just says to himself, 'oh, (expletive) and decks the guy in such a brilliant flagrant foul that no one will ever match it. and out he goes, a free man; he doesn't even have to wait around through the awful shoot out --- and he doesn't have to go through the indignity of being hugged by (the opposition)... he's already had a great shower, in private, and is off for some pernod and escargot, god bless him;
"it was brilliant; it was a masterpiece and it was the true crowning
touch to a great career - now no one will ever forget him"

If he had saved Zidane's penalty, or saved even one in the shootout, his case would have been stronger.
BTW, on the golden ball, is it correct that voting closed about an hour after the game, but is open for some time before that? They should take the count only after the final game, at least if they're doing it Heisman style and letting everyone with a credential vote.

Larry Bird exception. You can offer your own player, to retain him, a certain percent over the cap space (30% increases per year, maybe?). So they could offer Wallace more than a free agent.

Yes.
But it does only so much in the final. How much do you think Rooney cares about his two-match suspension? So he misses a couple of Euro 2008 qualifiers against Andorra and Macedonia? Ouch.

A bunch of things are probably going through his head at once (a stew of stupidity?):
1. The ref is ahead of the play and won't see this. (FIFA doesn't allow refs to use video replay to assess penalties, or for anything else either.)
2. We're a few minutes from time in the World Cup final. The ref won't assess a penalty, and if he does, it won't be a red card b/c he didn't see it, and the 'victim' isn't bleeding/paralyzed/unconscious.
3. Zidane is tall, but I think Materazzi is three or four inches taller. An effective head butt to the face would require Zidane to leave his feet. Plus, using the top of your skull on someone else's face can seriously injure or even kill them--for example, if you strike under the nose. Everyone who watches football has seen some scary head collisions--there have been skull fractures that effectively ended people's careers. Zidane wasn't looking to do that.
4. Zidane can't raise his right hand above his shoulder or push off. If he could, he'd probably have just shoved Materazzi.
5. A head butt in the center of the chest can hurt plenty.
Not that any of this really makes sense. I tend to agree with you, or maybe Zidane wasn't really looking to hurt Materazzi after all--just send him a physical message. Who knows.
Stupidity is hard to rationalize. It just is.

No one asked you to spend time with my kids. [actually, you are kind of proving my point, but that's okay]
I like Bendel's..it is more of a schlepp than Saks but a better Laura Mercier counter. Actually, I prefer Bergdorf. Better selection and that whole floor is pretty decent.

2.
A head butt under the nose with that force could easily kill someone. Soccer players, especially Zidane, have ridiculously strong necks from heading/plyometrics.

Maybe they should give out fuchsia cards instead. Then, at the end of the season, the player with the most cards is forced to wear a feather boa and thong while being given a public flogging--five lashes for each card--to teach him what "contact" is.
If the player's name happens to be "Cristiano Ronaldo," double the number of lashes, pour salt in the resultant wounds, and add tincture of iodine. Be prepared for some spectacular screaming (given what he's capable of when he's not even touched).
